Two Under 2

Traveling with 2u2?

We travel to visit family a lot - at least once every month or two. Right now DD sleeps in the pack 'n' play when we travel. When LO2 is born we'll need two travel beds, but I really don't want to get another pack 'n' play as there isn't really room for a second in any of the rooms we usually stay in.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where LO2 can sleep when we travel? Eventually we'll move DD to a big girl bed and it won't be an issue, but we'll need something for at least the first year or so.

Re: Traveling with 2u2?

  • Why don't you get a sleeping bag for your DD and have LO2 sleep in a PnP?

  • Right now DS still sleeps in a crib, so I have him sleep in a pack n play, and DD sleeps in the Rock N Play sleeper.

DD is a crazy sleeper, and would be all over the place. I'd like to keep her contained for a while longer. We do have a sleeping bag for the future, though.

Your DD is so young still. By the time your second comes around, she may not be all over the place.

Maybe have the baby sleep with you guys then?

This is what I'd suggest. Your first will be plenty old enough by the time your #2 gets here!

  • We bedshare with DS2 so that could be one option (if you are comfortable sleeping with your LO and if you have a proper bed, nothing like an air bed). And as pp mentioned, your first will be probably quite different by the time you have the baby and the PNP may no longer be suitable for your DD (she may outgrow the weight limit by then) so she would need a different place to sleep. You could have either on a mattress on the floor if there is a way to remove the bed frame (assuming your family has a place to put it).

  • Check out the Kidco Peapod...it may work for you.  Super easy to travel with since it folds so much smaller than a PnP does.

  • I think it's a little early to be worrying about this.  Your DD will be nearly 2 when LO comes along, and her sleeping habits will probably have changed by then!  I would bet you could easily put her in a bed and LO in the PNP... if not right away, soon after.  Couldn't you just stick LO in a padded laundry basket or something else you can borrow from your mom until she's ready for a bed or sleeping bag like Harriet suggested?  For example, when we took DD at 2 and LO at 4 weeks travelling, DD slept in a  twin bed and LO in the bassinet from our Phil & Teds.

I'm not "worrying", I'm just gathering information. I may be pleasantly surprised that DD is ready to sleep out of a crib or P'n'P by then, but she'll only be 18 months when this baby is born so I don't want to count on it. I'd rather have done the research and found something that could work for us then scramble to figure something out.

To PP posters - thanks for suggesting the Rock and Play and PeaPod, I'll check those out.

Ok, sorry to misspeak, I think it's a little early to be 'gathering information' on this.  Kids tend to change a lot when nearly doubling their age.

I realize I have plenty of time and a lot will change between now and then. The thought crossed my mind, though, so I thought I'd see what other 2u2 moms might suggest. I don't see the harm in knowing what the options are, even if it is "a little early."
