Hi!
Just wondering what others have used to increase the calorie count in their breast milk. What did/do you use, and how long did you LO need it for?
My DDs have been on and off with having 1 tsp of Lactose Free Enfamil per 100 mls of expressed breast milk, it seems to really make them gassy. I would love to hear some other ideas that I might be able to discuss with my pedi this week!
Re: Fortifying your Breast Milk
Most NICU's use human milk fortifier

But it is pretty expensive and there is no saying it couldn't also cause gas issues, you wouldn't know until you tried it. Did you LO have it in the NICU?
Do you have to fortify? My twins were only fortified with HMF while in the NICU for the first couple weeks (once they started bottles).
Besides HMF and formula, I don't think there is anything else. You could add gas drops to every bottle (it's safe for every feeding).

We tried a number of formulas before finally finding that Good Start settled best on his stomach. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding what works for them.

I'm confused I haven't even heard of human milk fortifier! I wonder if they ever used that on Andrew.
He went home on 24-cal fortified with Neosure. We quickly switched to Nutramigen. Around 3 months adusted the NICU doctor said he didn't need that, which I couldn't believe, so we went cold turkey to 20-cal and he did fine!
My girls were taking HMF when they were in the NICU, but it was discontinued because they were straining a lot with their tube feeds and pushing their feeds up the tube constantly... pedi thought it would help to stop the HMF...
Anyhow, thank you all for taking the time to respond!
