This is one of the "big" items that we still need, that I would rather buy new. (I think I am cool with a used swing, and bouncy chairs are pretty cheap if you aren't too choosey.)
What would you look for in a matress pad? And what kind of price range? The one I picked and registered for was $70, which is actually probably as good as it is getting, but I still want to hear your thoughts!
--- since I am in Canada not all the same stores and products are available, so that is why I want to know why you picked yours ----
Re: Choosing a good (cheap) crib mattress...
I don't know if you have Walmart, but you can get a mattress there for $40.
As far as used mattresses though, baby mattresses are a lot different than the ones we use. Most of them are covered in plastic or vinyl to prevent the mattress from getting messed up. The good thing about that, when buying used, is that you can bleach the entire thing and be certain that it is clean and germ free. Just thought I'd throw that out there...

Here is the crib mattress that we bought: https://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=4356909
There was one mattress at BRU that was a little cheaper than this one, and another one that was more expensive, so this was middle of the road. It was a good coil count, and firm. We wanted a good mattress, that could last through 2 children if we decided to have a second.
If I had a friend that had a crib mattress that they had kep covered with a mattress pad I would have taken a used one. A friend of mine did offer me the one that her daughter was using, and her daughter is 2.5 now, but she's in no hurry to move to a big girl bed, so I just never mentioned it to my friend again, and we bought our own.
