If you've pulled your back out

Any tips for what I should do for it? I went to lift DS and twist at the same time. I heard and felt a pop and now I cannot even stand up straight. I'm stuck home alone with 2 kids for at least 4 more hours.

Re: If you've pulled your back out

  • start popping anti-inflams

    ice

    book a chiro appt

(these are the three things I do - since I started working out the days of not being able to stand up have decreased...with those kind of days, I had to take a muscle relaxant)

  • I did this today when putting DD into DH's car.  Ouch!  My plan is to lay down on the floor when I finish my lunch.  I might roll up a towel and put that along my spine on the floor and see if that gets something to pop back in.

  • I did that a few weeks ago and started seeing a chiropractor that actually did worse for me than better because he was treating me for low back pain then and ended up getting an MRI to find out that I have 2 bulging discs and he was cracking my back by twisting it causing me more pain. Ibuprofen 600-800 mg 3 times a day and lots of ice 20 min on then 20 off and keep doing it. This is what they told me to do but only after I ended up in the ER and was given morphine shot and morphine pills to take home because the pain was soo bad. I started going to PT this past week and finally got some relief. GL
  • alternate ice and heat

    advil

    chiro

I throw out my back at least once a year, it sucks. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Ibuprofen, ice/heat, and soak in a tub with epsom salts.  And rest -- I threw my back out a couple of weeks ago and it is still bothering me a little because I keep overdoing.

  • OMG I'm in so much pain!

I cannot take ibuprofen. I took some tylenol right after it happened. After I got the kids down for a nap i put ice on it and then heat. It feels so much worse now! Like the inactivity made it worse. I am going to lay on the floor and stretch. This is so not cool at all! thanks ladies!

  • The inactivity will definitely make you tighten up. One of the worst things you can do when you throw out your back is to rest it. You need to keep moving and keep the muscles loose, heat will also help with that. I also highly recommend the chiro, I swear by mine when I throw my back out.

I second this.  My chiro recommends immediately starting 3 Advil (not a generic) 3x/day x 3 days.  When it's happened to me in the past (I have a hx of back problems) I can always get into him by the next day, but I always start that immediately.  Good luck- that is just miserable.

I meant to update yesterday to tell you that I think you saved me. I refused to give in to the pain all weekend. My DH did talk me into taking ibuprofen finally, but I still only took one 200mg tablet at a time. I kept moving like you said. I could not find a chiropractor that could get me in on the weekend. I kept stretching, vacuuming, anything really. I woke up yesterday feeling so much better. Today I have absolutely no pain at all. I did use my tens unit, too. Thanks for the help!
