Those who have had elderly cats

I'm worried that my kitty is nearing the end. She is 14, but has lived exclusively indoors and has been healthy her entire life. In the last month, she stopped sleeping in our bed. Now she has lost weight, walks with a slight limp and vears (sp?) off to the side when she does come out. She is still trying to be affectionate and purrs, but she isn't drinking much or eating anything but her treats. I know I should take her to the vet, but we have no $$ for it and no CC for backup. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this in their older cat?

Re: Those who have had elderly cats

  • I am sorry to hear about your kitty=(
  • yes. ?:-( ?It sounds very much like Abby in the week before I had to put her down (she was 15). ?I'm sorry. ?Cats are very stoic and don't let you know when they are in pain and from the sound of what you're describing, she is probably in pain. ? Abby never showed me she was in pain, but one x-ray showed her lungs were literally full of cancer.?

Please try to find the money to bring her to the vet; I have had to put both cats down in the past 2 months and while a lot of the tests I had run before it were pricey, it cost me nothing to euthanize them. ?Please don't let her suffer. ?I'm not trying to be snarky towards you, I promise. ?I just can't bear to think of a cat in pain.?

  • I feel so bad for not being able to take her in. I know I'm going to try to get the $ together somehow b/c I can't stand the idea of her being in pain either. Oh how I wish dogs and cats were like parrots and lived 80 years!

  • I agree that you should probably take her to the vet.  Do you have a humane society near you?  Those are usually a little less expensive.  Some vets will even do payment plans.
  • The cats I grew up with were indoor and lived to be 18 and 19.  My mom ended up putting them to sleep a year apart.  Both began to do similar things that yours is.  They also began to yowl lots.  They lost bladder function and one of them could barely see through the cataracts.  Putting them to sleep was not that expensive and she knew that it was the best for them since she is single and works full time and couldn't be there 24/7 for them.

  • Ask your vet about payment plans. ?14 isn't that old for a cat and this could be something they could help her with. ?It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. ?(((hugs)))
