My DH just went through our taxes on Taxslayer, and it appears we have to pay in over $6,000 this year. F my life. My husband and I both got promotions last year (not large ones by any means), and we're in the middle of "middle class", so it's not like we're rolling in money, AND we have a toddler and another baby one the way. I have NEVER had to pay in, I've always gotten a refund - nothing "huge", but always something. I have no idea what happened this year. I am shocked right now, to say the least.
H & R Block, you're about to get a new customer.
Re: Holy F...
With my new job and H's raise, we will be owing (if not this year, then next). We are in the next tax bracket now. We are hoping the baby offsets things next year a little.
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

This happened to us last year and will probably happen again this year even though I took a little more out. I can't believe that with a child you owe for the first time. Depending on the cost we're probably going to go to a CPA this year. FYI - my MIL works for the IRS and she says to stay away from H&R Block and places like that. She has to field calls about their mistakes all the time.

I hope it works in your favor and you go from red to green!
Yikes, I hope you find the error. I can't imagine owing 6k if you haven't owed previously, unless you changed your W4 information with your promotion or something. I assume you've been watching your withholdings throughout the year... did you notice anything that seemed "off"?
Even though you got promoted, it should all work out. Even if you were in the next tax bracket, we use marginal brackets in the US, so you'd only be taxed "extra" on the "extra" that you make
The ONLY thing I can think of other than this is that perhaps you're now subject to the AMT, and you weren't in previous years.
Good luck figuring it out!
What are you withholding on your W4?
I always select Married but withholding as Single just to withhold more to ensure I don't have to pay anything. I got a large pay raise this year, and sent everything over to my accountant in September to see if I was in the red.
After working in the accounting industry for a few years, I've seen a million different mistakes that H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt have done, but it's much better than attempting it yourself.
