TTC After a Loss

Baby aspirin to help with conception???

I've posted before that I had a miscarriage at 5.5 weeks 2 1/2 weeks ago (I guess that's considered a chemical, right?). I am assuming AF will arrive in the next week, and afterwards, DH and will will TTC again. Now I've heard that SO many women are taking baby aspirin while TTC to help increase blood flow to the placenta, thicken the uterine lining to help with implantation, basically to help maintain the pregnancy... even taking it all the way to their due date. This is all new to me and I am willing to try anything to ensure that my next pregnancy will be successful.

Thing is, I've called 2 OBs and and RE to ask about this, and they all said no, not to take it unless I have clotting issues, and that the next time I get a BFP, they may just put me on progesterone supplements. But I've heard all over the internet, and even DH's friend's wife takes baby aspirin with a lot of success. Even those who haven't had success conceiving for months, conceive as soon as they start taking baby aspirin.

So I'm wondering, how many of you ladies have had success in the past with this? And since it really won't hurt to take, being that the dosage is very small, should I just start taking it after AF anyways, even if the docs have told me it's not necessary? All the success stories I've heard make me want to just go ahead and do it.

Re: Baby aspirin to help with conception???

  • I have not had any success with this yet, but I do have a girlfriend that had 2 losses and then was put put on baby aspirin and it was successful.  I am also on it now.  My RE has you take it as soon as you start stimming or when you begin clomid.  For increased blood flow.

  • If your doctor has not prescribed it. Don't take it.

ETA: I will be on BA once I get a +HPT along with heparin injections, prednisone and possibly progesterone supplements. My doctor decided on this treatment after extensive testing and I was found to have a legitimate blood clotting disorder. I don't think you should take any medication lightly...even if it is "just" BA.

  • I've been on it since April and have had no success with it.  I have my dr's blessing to take it, but she doesn't think it will help me.  If all of your dr's have said no, then please don't take it, there are risks involved and you pay them to know what is right for you.

If you've asked your Dr.'s and they've said no, I would be cautious. Yes it is a small amount but why are they saying no? I would ask the Dr. to tell you specifically why they don't think it's a good idea.

ETA: I started on it a few months and I did not get a BFP right away.

  • First, I'm so sorry about your loss.

My OB mentioned something at my D&C appt about taking it with the next (fingers crossed) pregnancy, but we didn't get into a lot of details and I was a little out of it.  I know I don't  have a clotting disorder and I'm not really sure why he would suggest it (since I'm pretty sure my 39 year old eggs is the reason we m/c this time), but I'm planning on asking him about it again at my follow up appt in 2 weeks.  That's probably not much help, but at least evidence that some dr's do recommend it even if you don't have a clotting disorder.  That said,  you should go by what your doctor says and if you feel like your doctor isn't aggessive enough for you, maybe start interviewing new doctors?

    I've never taken it.

If I were you I would take the advice of your doctors who know your chart better than the internet and other's experience since they will be different than yours.

  • TICKER WARNING

Baby aspirin is generally used to treat clotting and other blood disorders. So it's not that it helps with conception so much as "might" help prevent complications with an otherwise healthy pregnancy. It has no effect on egg or sperm quality, or on the overall health of an embryo.

So, these success stories you're hearing are either cases where the woman had a disorder that warrented the baby aspirin - in which case, sure, it might have helped. The medical community is somewhat divided on the subject - or it's simply coincidence that they were taking aspirin and their pregnancy was successful. The aspirin does not change anything, in terms of your liklihood to concieve, and again does not affect the factors in a healthy conception (genetic material, egg quality, sperm mobility, etc.)

I was put on baby aspirin once a day when my RPL panel came back homozygous MTHFR (a clotting disorder also linked to the inability to absorb folic acid). My RE did not want me taking until she had a confirmed dx and a reason to start the treatment. I am also on Lovenox injections for the same condition. I did have a loss while on both aspirin and Lovenox, and we found other factors also contributing to our problems.

That being said, I have remained on the aspirin and Lovenox this pregnancy at the insistance of both my RE and OB. Because of the MTHFR, I will most likely be on baby aspirin therapy for the rest of my life, due to the increased risk of blood clots in general.

I would ask your doctor to run a blood panel before I would start taking a blood thinner like aspirin without their approval. Yes, it's a small dose, but it still thins your blood. And if you don't have need of that, it's not a good idea.
