Is a daybed safe for a toddler?

Alas, the big-girl bed saga continues. My new idea is a daybed. I like the idea that it is already enclosed on three sides. But I'm worried that could also be a safety hazard.

I'm assuming I need to use crib safety guidelines to make sure there's no where she can get stuck. Do they even make daybeds like that? Or am I being overly cautious?

Re: Is a daybed safe for a toddler?

  • DD has been sleeping in a daybed since last fall when she was 2-1/2. It's my daybed that I had when I lived at home. We plan to get her a new bed once our house sells and we move, but this works for now. We have a bed rail on the side for her and haven't had any problems with her getting stuck anywhere.

  • We also transitioned DD from her crib (that was basically a toddler-size daybed) since we had the side down starting from when she was about 2 1/2 to a regular daybed.  My DD has one from Pottery Barn Teen that has solid wood on all three sides.  She LOVES it.  A friend of my got her DD an Iron Daybed that had spindles around it and she put her crib bumper on it.  I thought it was a great idea - made the room look extra cute and also gave some more use for the bumper.  How old is your DD?  I would think if you are transitioning to a bed, she's probably old enough for most any kind, but if you're worried, I would go with solid wood (or solid whatever) vs. the open spindle-type.
  • Nora's crib actually converts into a daybed.  I have no idea about finding daybeds with slats that are close together.  I suppose you could measure them before buying one.
  • My son's crib transitions to a daybed and we'll be changing it to that and adding a bed rail for a while before we decide to turn it into a full size bed.  I'm hoping with the bed rail on it that he will stay in the bed rather than getting out and running around his room.  We won't be doing the transition for a while since he still enjoys his crib and hasn't tried to climb out yet.  I figure that if it isn't broken, why fix it?

  • I actually never thought about this. DS is sleeping in a daybed that is older than dirt (but still really pretty!), so I'm sure it doesn't meet crib requirements. Are you worried about limbs getting stuck? I did have a bed rail, but it was driving me nuts (having to lean over it, etc) so I just flipped the bed around so the high side is out and the wall is against the open side. It's kind of like a giant crib. LOL!
