Which pump?

I want to get a Medela Pump in Style but at BRU, there are 4 or so different versions.  One of which costs about $50 more.  Anyone have any input on which one is better / best?

Re: Which pump?

  • i'd say it depends on how you want to use it...the one kind has the pump in a removable bag.  I think this would be handy if you were a SAHM, but, being a WM, most of my pumping is done at work, so it wasn't worth the extra money to be able to take my pump out of the bag.  (or if you really want to use a different bag to carry your pump stuff in, i guess the removable one would be a bonus.)

I just got the PISA shoulder bag, basic model.  Works for me :)

  • as i write i'm pumping with the medela symphony hospital-grade pump ($1500 to buy new, but $80 a month rental). i bought a medela freestyle when i was pregnant and then switched to hospital grade because it works better and hurts less, even though it's an extra expense. so if you're going to be a working mom, i would consider renting hospital grade. (with the freestyle i was having supply issues and got bruises on my boobs from doing tons of pumping to increase my supply. bruised boobs = unacceptable =)  )

  • I'm a SAHM and using a hospital grade rental now.  We decided to buy b/c we are having latch issues and well as supply issues on top of some health issues with my son.  Basically, I may need to pump 100% but would be doing it at home mostly.  They are on sale right now and we have coupons so we wanted to buy this weekend just to save some $.  I have the rental till mid Feb though.
  • FWIW, several people on my local board swear by their ameda purely yours...it intrigues me because you can change suction and speed independently!

sounds good--just be aware that some people find the hospital pump better for increasing supply, so you might want to experiment with which works better.

i'm sorry you're having latch and supply issues--so stressful!
