Success after IF

If you exercised during pregnancy, I have some questions.

During my first pregnancy, I literally laid around my house like 3rd base.  I woke up, ate, and then took a nap.  Then I woke up, ate lunch and took another nap.  The couch was my home...it was pitiful, but thankfully, I didn't gain a ton of weight.

I don't intend to do that (be a lazy slob) during this pregnancy.  Caroline won't let me, and I am pretty addicted to going to the gym everyday anyway.  My gym has water aerobics and yoga for pregnant women, so I'm thinking about trying that out, and I'm pretty sure I will quit lifting weights...but other than that, I don't know how to proceed.

So, if you exercised during your pregancy...what did you do?  Did your OB give you any restrictions?

  • With Henry I walked for exercise and in the later stages I swam when walking became uncomfortable. My OB encourages walking, swimming and pre-natal yoga.

  • I walked on the treadmill nearly every day of my pregnancy.  Faster in the beginning when I didn't feel as pregnant and slower as I got bigger and bigger.

Does your gym have a trainer?  Perhaps you could make an appointment with one of them and ask what you should be doing during your pregnancy.  That's what I plan to do when I get pregnant.

  • I did low impact aerobics, water aerobics, and spinning. My OB just didn't want me doing any weights or high impact stuff. She also didn't want me getting my heart rate above 140. 140 is like nothing for me so I cheated on that all the time and got my heart rate up around 160 frequently.

  • The OB told me (and I continue to make sure its alright every time I go) that whatever I was doing before getting pregnant, is fine to do now. I've been doing a circuit training class twice a week and getting on the elliptical the other days.

(Although I haven't done a thing in the past week because I can't shake this sinus infection! I'm going for it today though.)

  • They say that what ever your typical level of activity is, you can continue it during pregnancy.  I have an exceptionally active job.  I am on my feet for hours.  I regularly lift heavy buckets of water, carry crates of flowers up and down stairs as well as loading into vehicles.  Neither my business partner nor I stopped doing any of it during either of our pregnancies.  My OB didn't give me any restrictions.

To give you an example of how much exertion is involved in the job regulary, my assistant, who is very very overweight, lost 31 lbs last year working for us because of the activity level.

  • I took walks and did Wii Fit. My OB told me that as long as I could talk while I was exercising I was okay. If I got to the point where I was out of breath and couldn't talk, that was too much. I exercised up until the day I gave birth.
