Pack 'n Play Question

First off - I've been posting a lot of questions lately and I thank everyone for their replies!!  It is so helpful to have the reviews of other moms and moms-to-be.

For those of you who have experiance using play yards, are all the bells and whistles necessary (changer/storage/mobiles/sounds) or is would you recommend just getting a $60 one that is basic and easy to transport?  I see most of the product reviews say the changers and bassinet sections are flimsy and they didn't feel comfortable using them.

 Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Re: Pack 'n Play Question

  • I have this and love it. I didn't get a changing table so the changer part helped. He napped in the little napper and when he outgrew that, we moved him to the next part (I forget what they call it - it's in the middle) and he is still in there to nap sometimes. As he gets older, he'll use the bottom part to nap and play or time outs. It came with a box for music or lights but I only really used it for the vibration. The changer felt safest (sturdy) out of the ones we tested. Some people don't need all the bells and whistles but those were the main things we were looking for.

  • We have a Graco one that includes a mobile, changer, and bassinet.

The changer was great when DS was a newborn, but once he got much over 10 pounds, I didn't like it because it dipped in toward the inside of the PNP. DS does like the mobile. We used the bassinet portion a lot, but recently had to lower the mattress all the way down since DS is over the bassinet weight limit. Overall, we're pretty happy with it.

  • I never used the bells & whistles on my mini pack n play but we got a gigantic one from graco, very basic and it was wonderful for about a year until we no longer needed a playpen in the house :)

  • We got the basic $60 Graco one to keep at the grandparents house for overnight visits and were given a hand-me-down one that is a much nicer Graco with bassinet, etc. to have at home as a playpen.  I have noticed that the mattress on the higher end hand-me-down is much more padded, but L never seemed to have a problem with the basic one and has slept on it happily since he was a couple of months old.
  • We also had the basic graco! Can't miss the extra gadgets of the higher end ones as we never got one. The basic was perfect and we made good use of it. But I am sure the extra gadgets can't hurt if you are ok with spending more.
