Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How often does your child get sick?

I know that part of being a toddler is getting all the sicknesses that are out there from every other toddler, but I'm a SAHM, and the only time my DS is around other kids is at the gym a couple times a week.

But, it feels like he's been sick on and off since Thanksgiving!

He'll be sick for like a week or two, then get better for a few days to a week, and then end up sick again.

My husband seems to think this is no big deal, but I feel like this isn't normal.  I know kids get sick, but this is crazy.

Re: How often does your child get sick?

  • Winter is rough for germs & sickness.  Even once a week at a public place would be enough exposure to make your LO sick :-(

I disinfect surfaces with Lysol wipes, and also buy Johnson & Johnson's antibacterial wipes for LO's hands.

I don't really think there's a whole lot you can do....but if it helps a little, then that's good :-)

    I love these J&J wipes!!!!

  • DS in in an inhome daycare with 5 other kids 5 days a week. He is pretty much exactly like you said...sick with something then better for a week or so, then usually has something else. It's not always something Huge but a runny nose and congestion (cold) are usually on and off with other illnessed thrown in. He's also an ear baby so anytime he gets the littlest cold he usually gets an ear infection. It was like this last winter too...it def. got waaaaay better in the spring and summer but since winter has hit so have all the sicknesses. So, I'd day it's pretty normal.

  • Once DS started at his daycare center at 12months it felt like I was taking time off of work because he was sick every other week.  Around 18months old I noticed a huge difference and (knock on wood) I have not had to take one day off yet this winter due to an illness for DS.  His Dr. had told me awhile back (when he was sick all the time) that their little immune systems really build up and by 2 years old he shouldn't be getting sick nearly as much.  I also think it has to do with the fact that he's past the "put everything in my mouth" stage.

  • Thanks for the input ladies.  I'm glad I'm not alone here!
  • My babies aren't in daycare either, but they seem to be sick all the time too. My pediatrician said that non-daycare toddlers get sick 8 times a year on average. Made me feel better.

  • KNOCK ON WOOD

He's had quite a few tummy issues (non-sickness, just constipation) and fevers due to teething, but he's never been sick.

He has been in day care.  He currently is at home with me, but he's been in day care in the past.

DH rarely gets sick so I'm hoping he inherited DH's immune system.  I get sick all the time -- several times since having DS and he has not gotten anything from me, luckily.

My nephew, however, is ALWAYS sick.  He always has an ear infection, the flu, something. It is constant -- at least once a month, sometimes more.

  • DD had one bad cold at 4 months that required breathing treatments, but that is the only time she has ever been sick.  This time of year is bad though, my sister and her kids keep passing it around to each other and I thought for sure DD would have been sick by now because she kept getting stuck around sick family members over the holidays, no matter how much I tried to avoid it.  Don't feel bad, I know a lot of people with sick babies right now.

  • DD just started daycare and she has been sick since starting, 3 1/2 weeks ago. Before, when I was a SAHM she was never sick.

I was talking to my hairstylist the other day, she takes her son to the gym after work and he picks up all of his colds/sickness there. It's probably the gym if your DS is getting sick a lot.

Better now than when he's in school and it sets him back.

  • Hopefully not jinxing us, but Aven hasn't ever been sick. I SAH with her half the time and the rest of the time she goes to our stores with me. She is around other people a lot but not quite in the same close quarters as in a daycare setting. I still BF twice a day (early morning and before bed) in hopes that this is helping us avoid sick days.
  • 12.5 months here and we have never been sick. I do stay at home with him but I do take him out quite a bit. We call him the tank:-) Although, he had some congestion last week which we were certain would turn into a cold, never did. I was actually a little concerned because I thought it was actually good for them to have a few colds?
  • DS is not in daycare but he has two older school aged sisters who bring home all the nasty germs from elementary school.  We've been lucky so far this winter and he's only really had one cold.

Last year he had ear infections and colds all the time.  Unfortunately kids do get sick a lot and it just seems to get worse as they get into school years.

With 3 kids, I feel like I should have a standing weekly appt at the pediatrician.

  • With our two kids, I've discovered there is no 'normal' for just about anything!

Our daughter was exclusively breast fed and went to a daycare that was militant with bleach, wipes, etc.  Her classmates were all first children (so no big siblings sending germy surprises), yet that group of kids was the sickest bunch I've ever seen!  In her first year at daycare (from 6 months - 18 months), she was sick at least twice a month.

Our son has been in daycare longer (since 4.5 months), was combo fed, gets his sister's school germs and most of his classmates are second/third children.  This daycare has a more relaxed policy about coming to school sick, too, so kids have lots of runny noses but... he's only been sick sick (more than a cold) once.  Either he has an iron-clad immune system or we just got lucky.

Good luck, and I hope this is the end of your sicko phase.  It sounds terrible!

  • My son is sick almost every week, mostly just with colds.  We're averaging about 3 times/month this winter.  Yeah, he gets stuff at DC.  But he also got a cold from DH over Thanksgiving, my brother over Christmas, and my dad over New Year's.  Kids can get germs anywhere.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • DD has been sick on and off since mid-October. Most of it has been ear infections though, and I'm hoping we can get tubes in in the next few months. Still, she gets probably 2 colds a month, and just got over a stomach bug. I should add that she's in DC full time, so she's definitely exposed to a lot of germs
