Please explain the appeal of the Keurig

I've used them before and get that you can make all different flavored coffees/teas/hot chocolates, but is that it?  I'm fine making regular old coffee, using my cappuccino maker, brewing tea, or making hot chocolate.  And aren't all the little cups wasteful?  Is there something I'm missing?  No offense to anyone who has one -- I know they are extremely popular, but I feel like this is the type of question I can ask her and not of my friends who are all excited that they just got one for Christmas.  Thanks!

Re: Please explain the appeal of the Keurig

  • My parents have one it's great for them because they like the taste of different strengths of coffee and they can each make what they want. But it's ridiculously expensive (according to them) monthly for just coffee.

  • I'm the only coffee drinker in my house so I like making just one cup. I used to make pots of coffee just for me and half of it would go down the drain. Plus mine was a gift, I never would have put out that kind of money for a coffee maker.

  • DH and I like different strengths of coffee.  It's nice for me because I can have a freshly brewed cup in less than a minute.  I usually have a cup when DD goes down for a nap and I can brew it as soon as she goes down.  She's not very consistent with her nap time, so I don't have a pot sitting there for a while or have to wait long.  I don't drink a lot of coffee and sometimes I have a second cup and sometimes I don't.  It's nice that I can make that second cup fresh and don't have to waste another cup if I made two cups in a regular coffee maker.

  • It's great for making just one cup, and you can use regular 'ol coffee, you don't HAVE to use the k-cups.  DH is usually the only coffee drinker here, and he take his cup to work with him.  It's nice not to have the waste.

  • Ditto PP's. You don't have to use the k-cups. If you use the "reusable" cup they have, you can use your own coffee. If you do that, then it's not as expensive as people make it out to be.

DH and I do drink coffee, but only one cup. I find it wasteful to make a whole pot of coffee for a few cups.

I much prefer a french press - that's how we make our coffee, even though we have a Tassimo machine as well.

  • I agree Mrsfirefly.  I like my plain ol' black cup of joe.  It wouldn't be cost effective for me to get one.

I love my french press.  We have a small one so I can easily make just one cup for me.

I agree - for me it's definitely the appeal of making only one cup.  Mine was a gift from DH.  He rarely drinks coffee but when he does he prefers flavored.  I like very dark strong coffee and don't like flavors.  So we can make our own individual cups and it works out nicely.  I never drink decaf, but when MIL or my mom come over they enjoy drinking it.  I can quickly make one single cup of decaf without having to make a whole pot of it, which is nice.

  • We actually have one, but it was a gift. For all of those saying they don't want to make an entire pot. You can make a pot of coffee bigger or smaller depending on how much coffee you measure out. So i don't get that logic. unless you are talking about wasting coffee filters...which are very cheap. My husband actually took our to work because it makes the most since there. There is less clean up and his has a water reseviour. So he leaves his desk once a day to get water. It is great for that type of thing.
  • I like to drink coffee all day. I don't want to mess with making a fresh 2 cup pot five times a day. And I don't care if the little cups are wasteful and expensive. It keeps me happy:)

  • We purchased one for my MIL for Christmas. She lives alone and usually buys her coffee at the local convenience store every morning. She loves it.
It would be a waste at our house since neither of us drink coffee. My tea pot is all I need!!

we tend to drink coffee at different times.

i love being able to offer fresh coffee, tea, etc. to friends.

i have not gone to dunkin donuts or starbucks in the 3 weeks since we got it.

    it's neat and tidy

  • I actually perk coffee.  On the stove.

Two of my friends have the Keurig and they say they drink much more coffee now.  I think that would be the case with me, too.

  • We bought FIL and MIL a Keurig for Christmas, because they're big coffee drinkers.  FIL came up with a way to make a cup he can fill with any coffee using Saran wrap as the lid so that he doesn't have to buy the really expensive cups to fill.  It really isn't expensive for them to use at all now that he does this!
