Please help with standing up in crib & not sleeping

So DD had a really good nap thing going for a while, and then she learned to stand up in the crib.  Now, all she does at nap time is stand in the crib and squeal, scream, laugh, cry.  I'll let her go for 20-30 minutes and then I'll take her out and try again for a nap in an hour or so, but it's basically failing.  I'm of two minds and don't know what is better.  Should I nurse her to sleep after a couple of failed nap attempts so she will get some sleep, or will that create a bad habit?  Or should I make sure she stays awake while nursing and just go through a few sleepless days until she gets used to standing up in the crib and it's no longer exciting?

Re: Please help with standing up in crib & not sleeping

  • OMG I could have basically just written this post. Help! Although for us it's mostly complaining and crying. I finally just got her to sleep after drinking her bottle and falling asleep on my lap.

  • I could have written this a month ago. Are you opened to CIO? If you know your baby is sleepy then let the standing go on X amount time you are ok with. For me it was 20 mins un less the crying became excessive. After the allowed time passed I would go re tuck in (IE swaddle, hugs and kisses) then try again.

After the novelty of standing passes your baby will get back on track

I am open to a little CIO (maybe fuss it out is more what I'm open to).  I'll let her fuss for up to 20 minutes, but she is a post-colic baby who can go from zero to hyperventilating and vomiting in a matter of seconds so I judge the CIO/FIO on the type of cry more than the time.  I guess what I'm struggling with is that she could go all day with no naps unless I nurse her to sleep, and I don't want to get into that habit again!  So do I forgo naps until the novelty wears off or just cave and nurse to sleep?  The only reason this isn't a problem at night is because I still nurse to sleep. Tongue Tied

Naps are a staple in my house. With out nap there is no mommy time. I would nurse to sleep then. or nurse till she is relaxed. But if you think she can go with out naps for a day or too then do it.

I had days where in order to get that nap in I had to drive around. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. How old is she? I know that around the time my boys learned to stand in their crib they were also able to be awake for a full three hours before getting sleepy.

good luck & listen to your mommy instict

  • Thank you ladies for the advice. We are having the same problem.  DS is so active, crawling everywhere, into everything, and had recently learned how to pull himself up in his crib.  I didn't think I'd have to worry about this for months, but such is life.

  • Once the novelty wears off it'll get better! I'm just now not really nursing DD to sleep!! I think what I did at that stage was go in, lie her back down with minimal interaction, then leave for a bit until she did it again! Repeat, repeat, repeat until she gave up from exhaustion.

Thank you -- I'll have to try this, for the next nap that is. I am sitting her nursing her to sleep now Embarrassed after she stood in the crib and cried for 20 minutes.
