Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Finger foods - when did you start?

DD will be 7 months in just over a week.  She is eating really well and I noticed last night she was using two fingers to try to grab at things, but she doesn't have a tooth yet.  When did you start things like teething biscuits, puffs, small chopped up steamed vegies, peas, blueberries?

Re: Finger foods - when did you start?

  • We started this weekend at 6.5 months with a super ripe banana. (It basically fell apart when you touched it.) This was the look I got:

It was basically: Soooo, are you going to feel me or what?

I ended up smashing them down with my own hands and feeding them myself.  Not quite how I thought it would go, but we're still working on it...

  • Around 5 months.  I'm not doing BLW - I still spoon feed a lot but I give him "real" food just to see what he does.  He can eat puffs like a champ.  He's fed himself toast, waffle, sweet potato fries, banana, steamed carrots...you get the idea.

  • We have tried a few times (starting around 7 1/2 months) and fed him small pieces of sweet potato, chicken, or banana. He gagged a lot at first and didn't seem at all interested. Just these past few days he has tried on his own to pick up pieces of cheerios from his high chair tray and now when I feed him small pieces of things he is starting to like them more. It has taken a little time but he is slowly doing better. Now that he seems more interested, I am going to pick up puffs this weekend and I might try save more chunks instead of pureeing everything when I make his food.

  • 6 months.

We started with steamed broccoli and carrots, roasted sweet potato and sqash, banana, avocado, rice cakes, chicken...

We're not doing peas/blueberries yet because he's still perfecting his pincer grasp =)

  • DS gags on anything not pureed. We're trying to thicken up his purees with cereal so he more used to it. He's totally developed the pincher grasp too, and I keep trying every once in a while with finger foods. But that gagging needs to calm down!

  • DS just started eating cheerios this week.  It's so darn cute, I can hardly stand it!  He mostly stirs them around his tray, but he works really hard to get a few into his mouth and then gums them down!

  • We've been trying for about a month but he's just now starting to feed himself larger things like crackers.  He got the hang of mum mums right away at 7 months, but still doesn't have the hang of smaller things like puffs or yogurt melts.  He's getting it slowly but surely.  He's not really a big eater in general, so it hasn't surprised me that he's not picking up and bringing food to his mouth.

  • We didn't smart small things until last week with blueberries.  Small pieces scare me.  But she has had other finger foods - toast, rice cakes, meats, etc etc since 6 1/2 months.
