I think "babymoon" is the dumbest term ever. To me a "babymoon" should be taken after the baby comes. Couples do not go on honeymoons before they have the wedding.
Why can't people just call it what it is: a trip or vacation. I hate cutesy things, and I think this is just one of those other things people try to make cutesy because they are expecting a baby.
Ooooooo! THIS! I don't understand why anyone would want to go on vacation when they're huge and can't drink. Nothing about a trip to the tropics sounds good to me unless I can have a bigass tropical drink in my hand!
I agree. What kills me most is those that go to "all-inclusive" resorts for their "babymoon" and you can't even drink!!! Maybe having a couple drinks here and there isn't important to some, but I wouldn't want to waste the money on a vacation that has free drinks (so DH enjoys all of it) and you just get the pool.
I side-eye (and secretly for trainwreck reasons) love all the posts from women who hate their husband's video game addictions. I'm sure he was like that before you married him.
I hate hate hate watching other people play video games. I would have never dated a gamer for this reason. Would have never even given them a second glance once I learned of their hobby.
Meh, DH enjoys his video games. I actually like that he has that hobby, as it leaves me time to pursue stuff that's interesting to me. I knew that before we got married, and I'm not surprised that he kept that hobby after we got married.
For every hour DH spends playing games on his computer, I spend 2 on The Bump.
LOL yes! My DH does all this running around and stuff and is never home and then he's like are you still on that webiste?? uhh yeah you aren't here to hang out with so why not
I think the people who want to be in there are weird.
My FIL who lives in NC (we're in OH) said to me "Don't worry, I'll be there to watch the birth. I haven't seen one in a while, but I think I remember how to do it."
CREEPY! Is he a farmer or something? lol How many has he seen that he's so experienced?
No, not a farmer, just an a$$hole. He was referring to the births of his two sons 30 or so years ago. Did I mention that I despise this man?
I hope he announced this via phone or email... because how could you possibly keep a straight face? or not vomit? or slap him? or have DH slap him?
I'm sorry but I have to share this with DH and others... it's so funny and weird all wrapped in one.
Thank GOD it was on the phone. After we hung up I was an absolute mess. I was crying and screaming at DH (which I have NEVER done) and punching/throwing pillows etc. I told DH what his dad had said and he calmly looks at me and says "He is not going to watch the birth. I'll never let that happen." I LOVE DH!
I would have had the same reaction, and it's awesome that DH supports you!

ITA.
I always want to tell them to STFU. At least their men are in the house with their hobbys. J's hobbys take him out, to the woods, mountains, lakes, and I dont see him from before sun up to after sun down. I dont complain because thats who he is, I knew it coming into this, but somedays I wish his a$$ was glued to the couch with a controller in his hand so I could at least see him.
Really it isn't any better to see the back of someone's head and not be able to even have a conversation with them. They may as well not be home.
We all want helathy babies to imply otherwise is just being an elitist asshat.
Absolutely this. Why should a poster constantly have to put in the disclaimer that in addition to what they're hoping for, they would like a healthy baby?
I'll offer up another view to this opinion. When someone says "ZOMG, I hope it's a girl/boy!" there IS the insinuation that they will be disappointed if LO is not what they are hoping for. Which, isn't that much of a mental stretch to make. If I'm going to a store wanting Ben and Jerry's Phish Food, and all that's left if the store brand Phish Food knock-off, I'm going to be disappointed.
I fully understand that we're all hoping for a healthy LO...that goes without saying. But, posting about clear gender preferences will be viewed similar to the examples I posted above.
Well said, even though I totally played in the "I hope it's a boy post," because I'm scared to death to have a daughter. All I want is a healthy baby and I would by no means be disappointed to have a daughter, just afraid.
I get this, but on the opposite end. I'm sure I'll love a boy, but I'm scared to have one. DH and I only have sisters and DH isn't into "manly man" things other than fixing up our house, so I have no idea what to "do" with a boy, especially if I end up with a "typical boy."
I agree. If I find out I'm having a girl, it'll almost be like an "awe shucks" type of disappointment, not like a spiraling depression that keeps me from bonding with the baby. It's not like I'll resent the baby, but the visions I've had in my head of this child will be readjusted and the excitement will shift.
I secretly hate dogs. Yup, I said it. They smell, they're always trying to lick you, and they get hair all over stuff. Not to mention their breath stinks and it grosses the crap out of me when the owners let them lick them all over their face. Don't get me wrong, I think they're cute from far away but I don't like being in a house with one.
I'll take my little, soft, cuddly kitty any day of the week.
Flame away!
I don't have either, but I feel like cats are really gross. They get far more hair everywhere than dogs do. I don't know many dogs who are capable of jumping fully onto the kitchen counter, or hiding in the top shelf of the linen closet so when I wipe my face with a clean towel at a friend's home, I get cat fuzz in my mouth. Plus, I think a lot of cat owners aren't nearly as diligent about cleaning the litter box as they could be, and there is generally at least one section of the house that smells.
They creep me out too. If I am petting a dog, he will either stay or walk away...a cat seems like it contorts it's bones and all of a sudden is on top of the TV cabinet.
I have a dog and a cat. The cat came first and she sheds like crazy. We'll get black haired dustballs on our steps 5 minutes after we sweep/mop/vacuum. So because of her, we opted for a low-to-no-shed golden doodle. And flame what you want because I didn't go to a humane society to get my dog, but it's awesome not having to pick up dog hair everywhere (minus the 2-4weeks she does shed). Plus, dogs are more personable. My cat is a mean b!tch.
This is why I took my maiden name off FB... It was a very, very unique name and I was the only one with it. My married name is in the top 10 most common in the US, so I feel more anonymous now. And my FB is set so unless you are friends with friends, you can't even find me via search. (Maybe I'm a little bit in a bubble more to hide from students and co-workers really, they are scarier than murderers.)
Ha! I did the same exact thing. I think I was one of 3 people who had my first name and maiden name. Now, I'm one in 10,000+ if you search for me on FB or the internet. I do enjoy the additional privacy this affords.
I must be lucky because my maiden name and married name are SO common.
However, the combo is NOT. I might have to take my maiden name off my Facebook.
Why give them one more way? I'm not living in fear or a bubble, but I will NOT be posting a giant "it's a girl" sign in my front yard, even in the nice neighborhood I live in.
Oh! This just reminded me....
There was a "stork" sign my neighbor put up on their front lawn. It had the kid's FULL name, birth weight, time, date, sex, everything. Our neighborhood is pretty safe, but it brings up two questions:
-Why post that for ANYONE to see?
-Who the hell cares that your kid was 7lbs2oz at birth? I've never even met you, so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to care how much your kid weighed at birth.
I hate these signs. People around here try to outdo each other with them. I might do balloons. MIGHT. But it's no one's business what I named my kid and how big he or she is, AND where I live.
I side-eye (and secretly for trainwreck reasons) love all the posts from women who hate their husband's video game addictions. I'm sure he was like that before you married him.

DH likes to play games (like PS3 type games) but I wouldn't have dated him long, or married him if he was married to his computer/Playstation because he had to play games. His brother plays a lot of games and I tend to think it's a 2nd relationship for him (the other would be a relationship with his wife). DH cracks out on a new game he buys and will be up late playing it (he'll play when I go to bed) or on weekends when I'm out shopping. I don't sit and watch him though, I hate watching someone else play games; i hate when people watch me play games.

I'm sure most parents try make the transition easy on the older siblings without them needing a toy. Most older siblings think its cool just to be a big sister/brother, no toy needed.

I think it's a matter of association, rather than unnecessarily showering your child with a present. They get a toy and a new sibling who will take away their parents undivided attention. DS doesn't seem to have to many jealousy issues and does really well at DC, so I'm unsure if we'll go this route, but I take no issue with it.
I think nurseries are a waste. My baby will sleep in my room! I just don't see the point in spending money on paint/decorations for a room that will probably change in a year or two.
As for the gamers UO. I married a video game player. He loves me and makes it clear that I come first. I feel that he works and is currently doing a lot around the house so why shouldn't he get some game time. I see it as any other hobby. Now if it were to become a problem we would discuss this immediately.
I think it's creepy that someone would rather keep their baby in their room instead of putting the baby in its own room (i'll give an understanding to those keeping baby in the room for a few weeks). A room can be painted/decorated any way you want it to be. It doesn't have to be painted pink/blue with rainbows, cars or whatever on the walls. Paint it white, put a crib and dresser in it and call it the baby's room. My bedroom is for my DH and I, not for our children (though we could fit the von trapp family in the room). The baby will be sleeping in the nursery from day 1. And the nursery will remain a nursery for the following child(ren) we decide to have (at least one more, maybe two).

OK, I have to step in here. Whether or not you agree with it, owning a gun IS a right. It's in the Constitution/Bill of Rights. Healthcare is NOT a right provided by the Constitution. I agree the current system is f*cked up. But having the gov't force me to buy something (like healthcare) or face penalties/fines is just as f*cked up. It's a very slippery slope. If they can force us to buy healthcare, they can force us to buy anything. Not cool.

I think Universal Health Care is a good option - as long as it's done a good way. Doctor's, I do not believe, should have a salary cap. They went to school, got the education and they deserve to make the money they make. I also do not believe ordinary citizens should be required to pay for healthcare. If you're making a low salary where you can barely afford to pay the bills, having to pay for healthcare on top of that (if your work does not pay for it) can really hurt people, throwing more people into debt. When I was 21 and a temp employee, I had my own apartment/bills. I had no health insurance until I was hired full-time by the company I temp'd at. I would never have been able to afford health insurance during that time. And it's not like I was living outside of my means, but whatever i had leftover was very minimal.

So that way, little Susie doesn't learn the hard disappointment that the world does not revolve around her. Little Susie probably gets a toy each time she behaves out in public as well.

I know it's hard for some people to lose weight, but after a year, it's not baby weight it's just weight. Stop blaming the baby and exercise. Go ahead, flame away.

Sounds like my room... we can sleep an entire family in here.
I agree with you, although LO will sleep in here for the first few months, I think having their own space is important. If they spent the first two years in our room with us, not only would that put a damper on making baby #2 (and the things married people like to do), but I think it would be a jolt for them to suddenly have to go into a room that is unfamiliar to them at 2 or so. A nursery doesn't have to be cutesy. I am purposely decorating and buying furniture with the idea that it will need to transition with them
On another note, I doubt a kid will want their bedroom redecorated at 2? I can see that coming later on. My niece was 7 when she wanted to change up her space (and at this point they'd already converted the crib into a bed).

I have to laugh at this... my mom used to tell people all the time that she hadn't lost her 'baby weight'. One day my dad looked at her and said, "Honey, the "baby" is 9 now. I think you need a different excuse."

I pretty much only look forward to UO Thursdays and FFFC on the board at the moment. I'm kinda ambivalent about this. . . I got a toy lawnmower when I was very young so I could "help" my dad mow. When my brother was born, my mom bought me a little baby so I could have one just like her. I was too young to understand what was going on, so the baby doll helped me to understand. I think it depends on the kid, but I disagree with gifts used as a reward.

I had this conversation with my mom the other day. I had only mentioned that the doctor was happy with my weight gain and that I don't need to gain more than 10-15lbs more. My mom goes into this "Do you know how hard it is to lose the baby weight? I put on 50lbs when I was pregnant with each of you, and it took me 2yrs, each time, to lose the weight. I tried diet pills, water pills..." I wanted to throw in their "bulimia." (she did that) but I didn't say it.
I have a plan as soon as I can start excercising after baby, it'll be exercise and WW. I've given myself 6-12months after baby to be back to the weight I want to be (pre-preg + 30lbs more).
But I agree with you - after a year, it's no longer baby weight you're carrying. Stop blaming your droopy stomach on your kids, like they know they caused that, and stop telling your friends "if I didn't have kids I wouldn't be pudgy."
The current Healthcare System here is terrible, but I'm not what is currently proposed is the best solution.
I think we need to begin with regulating the Insurance Companies, and examining how to prevent frivolous lawsuits and cap malpractice suits. Malpractice insurance premiums are so extremely high, it's sickening and honestly not worth it to be a doctor, especially not an OBGYN.
Yes - I realize that there are legitimate lawsuits out there, but this isn't about them.
I have a hard time with a public option for healthcare, mainly because I see healthcare as a business not a right. No one is walking into an emergency room and not being treated, all of our babies will be delivered by doctors (or whoever we choose). And all businesses have the right to grow and prosper. The gov't getting involved so intricately with businesses is a terrible idea and a slippery slope.
My other concern would be employers dropping their coverage so that the employees can pick up the public option instead. There could possible be provisions in the current legislation to prevent this.
I believe in a smaller, less involved gov't with lower taxes.I have no desire to pay 50% of my income to taxes. We should all have to manually pay our taxes to the gov't just so that we can actually see the amount of money coming out of our pockets weekly and going to Uncle Sam. And it's only going to get worse.
We all want helathy babies to imply otherwise is just being an elitist asshat.

It's similar to the skinny girl complaining to her more "round" friends how she's so upset because now she's a size 4 instead of a size 2. Or, someone posting a thread "Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope LO doesn't have brown eyes!!!!" Or, "I'm so disappointed that the 5 star hotel we wanted is all sold out when we're heading on vacation. Now I'm going to have to rough it at a measly 4 star hotel! The horror!"
Some people would read those statements and think "Really? THAT'S what she's concerned about? Wow. It must be nice."
There are bumpies on here (check out the mc/pgl, IF, TTCAL, TTTC, and adoption boards) who would thank their lucky stars for ANY somewhat healthy baby. Boy or girl. They are on the month boards too, most likely rolling their eyes at a post where someone is upset because LO is a boy or girl. The idea that someone would bother wasting time with worrying whether LO is sporting a penis between the legs or not can be such a foreign concept.
I fully understand that we're all hoping for a healthy LO...that goes without saying. But, posting about clear gender preferences will be viewed similar to the examples I posted above.
When I go to the store really wanting mint chocolate chip ice cream I am not at all disappointed coming home with cookie dough.
I want a girl because I want a purple nursery and to name her after my aunt. Not to mention I feel like it will be less of a challenge coming from an entirely female family (my dad moved out when I was a kid it was just me, mom, 2 sisters and a grandmother. Although I have a wonderful relationship with my dad). However if its a boy I was will be so excited for the challenge, the learning and all the cool boy toys.

True. I am a proponent of universal health care, and also do believe in the right to own guns (with proper registration). Religion scares me, and yet I am conservative on some social issues (see my why are you having baby but can't bother with being married post above). I'm pretty blue, but red on a few issues.
Here's the thing....I haven't seen any possibilities that make universal health care a viable option. Washington is concerned with getting everyone coverage. Problem is, that's expensive. And, the old rich white men who line the pockets of congress (and make up congress) aren't about to raise taxes to pay for it or bother to look at -why- it's so expensive.
So what to do? Well, the price of health care needs to be brought down, that much is true. A large amount of money that doctors make goes to pay for malpractice insurance. Why is this? Are there that many doctors out there who are practicing bad medicine? Enough to justify that high of a price on malpractice insurance?
I think we can cut down the cost of malpractice insurance, thereby reducing the fees doctors need to charge, thereby making healthcare more affordable, if we can reduce the sue-happiness that is rampant in this country.
Case in point: My MIL tripped on a sidewalk. She sued the county for $15k. Whenever someone is slightly wronged, there is the thought "how can I make money for this?"
Example of an efficent system: If someone wants to bring a complaint against a broker/dealer with the SEC, they must pay a few hundred dollars. Why is this? So that the SEC is overwhelmed by clueless investors wanting to complain for minor issues.
I wish the court system would adopt something like that. Where if you want to bring someone/something to court, and the court does not rule in your favor, you have to pay a fine for wasting the court's time. This would greatly reduce the number of frivolous lawsuits which suck up malpratice insurance money.
I hate when people appropriate traditionally male names for girls. What are people supposed to name boys if so many boys' names are becoming unisex, which eventually leads to the names being seen as feminine? And I really like the name Micah for a boy. I'm sad that people are using it for girls and making it less usable for a boy's name.
This really bugs me because there's a legit, biblical feminine version of this name...Mica. So all they would have to do is spell it without the H and voila! It sounds the same to Americans, but it would be an indication of it being attached to a girl. There's one poster with two (or three?) boys names in her siggy with a pink badge, and I want to show her that there's a great alternative, but sadly, I can't seem to do without looking like an asshat (thanks five_letter for renewing my interest in the word).
This kind of goes along with the pregnancy isn't an excuse to get fat opinion, but what about moms who have had their LO over a year ago and still claim that it's "baby weight" on them? I know it's hard for some people to lose weight, but after a year, it's not baby weight it's just weight. Stop blaming the baby and exercise. Go ahead, flame away.
I know! I have a friend who has a four year old and still calls her weight baby weight. She was slim and healthy before the baby and would need to drop about 5-6 sizes to get back to her pre-pregnancy weight. The only thing that bothers me is that now that I'm pregnant, she makes comments like, "You'll never be that size again..welcome to being a mom." Arrgg!
Also, I have a WW right by my house and have heard good things about it. Originally I was just going to exercise, but I think doing WW might give me some extra motivation.

2. I can't for the life of me understand people that are against universal health care. Especially with the arguments "hey they should be able to get their own if they work hard" Hello most affordable health care is actually connected to your employer I know plenty of people that technically work harder than me(longer hours, hard labor) and either have terrible health care or the job doesn't provide it so they would have to pay 800+ a month for mediocre coverage. I am blessed with awesome coverage, that I pay about $450/m for, but that doesn't make me forget about those out there that are struggling. The poorest people can get medicaid and the ones lucky to have good jobs or a lot of money can get a good plan, what about all those hard workers in the middle? I won't even get started on the people with preexisting conditions.
I don't think I ever posted an UO, I guess I was backed up,whew!

Owning a gun IS a right. It's called "The Right to Bear Arms".
For the record an argument could be made that the right to bare arms is referring to the right to join a militia.
I however whole heartedly believe in the right to bear arms, and whole heartedly believe in gun laws and limitations. (Freedom of speech isn't unlimited, neither should be the right to bear arms). There is not much guaranteeing a right to health care.

This annoys the crap out of me! Someone said to me, "You can just throw out all of those size 2 jeans right now." Really? I gained 40 lbs my first two years of college and I lost that AND kept it off for 13 years. I've been running since 2003. While I don't expect to "snap back," I know what is a healthy weight for me and I will work to get there. Having a diabetic father, asthma, joint and back issues, I am especially conscious of the impact weight has on your health.

I think we need to begin with regulating the Insurance Companies, and examining how to prevent frivolous lawsuits and cap malpractice suits. Malpractice insurance premiums are so extremely high, it's sickening and honestly not worth it to be a doctor, especially not an OBGYN.
Ha! It seems like you're as red as they come, and I'm as blue as they come, but it sounds like we're thinking the same thoughts on this. I was typing up a similar rant as you were posting yours.
Re: It's Unpopular Opinion Day!
LOL yes! My DH does all this running around and stuff and is never home and then he's like are you still on that webiste?? uhh yeah you aren't here to hang out with so why not
I would have had the same reaction, and it's awesome that DH supports you!
Really it isn't any better to see the back of someone's head and not be able to even have a conversation with them. They may as well not be home.
I agree. If I find out I'm having a girl, it'll almost be like an "awe shucks" type of disappointment, not like a spiraling depression that keeps me from bonding with the baby. It's not like I'll resent the baby, but the visions I've had in my head of this child will be readjusted and the excitement will shift.
I must be lucky because my maiden name and married name are SO common.
However, the combo is NOT. I might have to take my maiden name off my Facebook.
I hate these signs. People around here try to outdo each other with them. I might do balloons. MIGHT. But it's no one's business what I named my kid and how big he or she is, AND where I live.
ITA! Unfortunately, the majority of people against health care think owning a gun is a right. Fine, if so, then please explain how health care is not a right.
OH! I just thought of something..
I think its dumb to get your older children gifts when you have the baby, why do they need a present? Mommy had a baby so here's a toy to make you feel better? I'm sure most parents try make the transition easy on the older siblings without them needing a toy. Most older siblings think its cool just to be a big sister/brother, no toy needed.
Because one's in the bill of rights and one is not. That's an easy one.
Owning a gun IS a right. It's called "The Right to Bear Arms".

My official unpopular opinion today:
I pretty much only look forward to UO Thursdays and FFFC on the board at the moment. It's the only posts that get people in some sort of conversation (even in FF posts) vs the "We're having a..." or "Why are you having/against elective u/s??" and whatever other posts that we've seen a million times. I tend to come to the board a couple times a day now, instead of having it open all the time, and I just find a lot of repetitive posts so I just close my browser. Maybe it's just me, maybe my patience is wearing thin, but don't people read subject lines to see if there might be the same question three posts down instead of posting a the same question in a new thread?
I'm kinda ambivalent about this. . . I got a toy lawnmower when I was very young so I could "help" my dad mow. When my brother was born, my mom bought me a little baby so I could have one just like her. I was too young to understand what was going on, so the baby doll helped me to understand. I think it depends on the kid, but I disagree with gifts used as a reward.
I had this conversation with my mom the other day. I had only mentioned that the doctor was happy with my weight gain and that I don't need to gain more than 10-15lbs more.
This might be one
