Baby Names

2 middle names?

We found out we were having a girl yesterday and pretty much had our minds made up that we would be calling our little girl Story. Now we need a middle name. I love Story Anna and DH loves Story Rae. I might have come up with a compromise that DH says "doesn't sound bad" which means he doesn't hate it and he's thinking about it. Story Anna Rae (Brand) <---last name. Do you think it would be too much to have 2 middle names? What would she put on papers that ask for your middle inital?

Re: 2 middle names?

  • Personally, when I see two middle names, I just think it was parents that couldn't make up their mind, and decided to stick their poor child with an awkwardly long name rather than make a decision or compromise.  Maybe you'll have another daughter, save one :)

  • My mother gave me and my brother and sisters two middle names, except my older sister who has three. We only put the first one on paper when asked for a middle initial. It's not the most annoying I can complain about, but I don't see the point.

  • I just know that this is probably the only way I could have the name Anna in there is to put Rae in there also. Does it sound bad or should I look for another middle name even through I LOVE Story Anna?

  • You could hyphenate the middle name to Rae-Anna.  Or go with Rhianna, Rheanna, Raeanna, etc.

  • We are most likely giving this baby two middle names in order to honor family members, and this is our last child.  So, two middle names doesn't bother me at all.  However, the combo of Story with Anna right after as a MN really flows together, kind of like Pollyanna, if that makes sense?  Is Anna after anyone or just a name you like?
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • When DD was born, we wanted a mn to honor both our moms.  Their mn's are Ann & Marie, so K's middle name is Annmarie.

What about Anna-Rae?  Technically one name, but you get to use both.

  • Anna is after my middle sister Reanna...so doing Raeanna or Rea-anna wouldn't work cause thats too close to her name... maybe Anna-Rae would work.

  • I think two middle names is unnecessary. Story is not markedly feminine so I definitely think you should use a feminine mn. Story Anna-Rae does work and I think it sounds great, I definitely wouldn't go with Story Rae, it's way too gender neutral as a whole.

My DD has two mn's so I'm fine with that.

But Story Anna sounds like one word when you say it. So I actually like Story Rae Anna much better! If you both like those middle names I say go for it!

  • I like 2 middle names, but I don't like those... I think it is one thing if it is after someone or something like that... but just liking 2 names.... eh.  What about Raeanne instead of 2 of them.

ETA:  Sorry I hadn't read the previous responses.  I still think Rae first sounds better... Anna Rae sounds super old southern.

  • My husband has two middle names and we'll probably do the same for our kids. However, I'm much more amenable to it when the middle name has meaning. My DH's second middle is MIL's maiden name. His first middle is for a saint, because he's Catholic. So there's more of a reason for each one than "my parents liked a bunch of names and couldn't decide."

He hasn't encountered a problem. For his middle initial he uses the initial of his first middle name. The only time he uses all 4 of his names are for things like diplomas and our wedding invitations. Obviously he doesn't hate it, since he suggested we do the same with out kids.

  • I have spent my whole life with a double first name and a middle name, yet have always gone by a nickname...I think it's confusing as hell, there's never enough room on documents or tests for the whole thing, and it just generally confuses everyone (insurance, dmv, schools, etc). Just pick one, it makes things later on MUCH easier, TRUST ME.
  • I have two middle names as does my brother. It has made NO effect on my life. Most forms have enough room for all my names and when they don`t I use the tow middle initials. It`s really not a big deal.

Agreed, we didn't do two middle names simply bc we couldn't agree, its tradition in my family and I wanted to continue it. We also always do MNs for family members, you can tell by my tickers that both my kids MNs are also quite long, I am sure they will be fine.

  • I have two middle names.  My mom wanted to name me after my grandmother and it just didn't flow well.  When she added in the second middle name, it just sounded better (and the initials were much better).

I have had some issues with government/formal paperwork because my full name is too long.  My driver's license has a hyphen between the two middle names because they cannot have a space and they cannot have two middle names, my original SS card didn't have my second middle name because at the time it wasn't allowed.  When I got married and changed the name on my SS they were then able to put both middle names on the card but they don't fit, so my second middle name is short one letter on the card.  I have given my license to people for random paperwork or whatever, and on many occasions I have been asked what name they are supposed to use.  It is a little bit of a pain at times, but not really anything major.

When I sign my name I use my first middle initial, but when I initial something I use all four initials.  A few friends and family members call me by my four middle initials.

  • I like Story Anna, as Story Rae sounds like a stutter!
  • My parents gave my two siblings and I each two middle names. One after someone one each side of the family. I always put both my middle initials on any forms requiring this information. I don't find it a hassle at all and am planning on doing the same with my LO. My sis did the same with my nephew too.
