WTF is it with 5am wake up calls???

Both of my kids are RIDICULOUSLY predictable. I swear sometimes DH thinks i am a mind reader- but I just know my kids and they are just very easy for me to read.

Chase has been pulling some 5am crap lately. Ok fine. No biggie. Feed him and put him back to bed. Nope. No way, no how. If he gets up ANY OTHER hour of the night- i can get him back down no problem-o. If he gets up between the hours of 5am-7am- he will be UP FOR THE DAY. No joke. I can do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING short of nursing him while standing on my head to try to get him down for a nap (at any point of the day).

Now if he wakes up any time after 7am- he goes down FINE for naps. He will wake up for one- and go down again easy peasy again in 2hrs.

If he gets up between 5-7am. Nope. You are in for the long haul and you just hunker down and prepare for a long arse ugly day.

Why is that?

This has happened about 10x in the last month. I have done EVERYTHING I can think of. Anyone have any suggestions? lol.

He has now been up for 9hrs and is all smiles. Not cranky. eating normal, etc.

I was going to check in with you this week re: sleep.  Honestly?  I have zero helpful information but wanted to say that Travis is a 5am baby too.  Killing me.  Somehow getting up at 5 makes me more tired than waking at 2, feeding, and going back to sleep until 6 or 7.

Regardless, I've vowed to re-read my sleep book this week.  Maybe I'll have a "lightbulb" moment after doing so.

Hang in there.  I *totally* feel your pain.  :(

  • that's just the weird thing though- since i have started cereal- he has been WONDERFUL. and napping GREAT. every 2hrs easy peasy. nurse him and put him down. conked out.

However if he gets up between 5-7am- FORGET IT. trying to get him to nap just is like throwing icecubes at the devil in Hell. It is pointless.

If he gets up 1x at night to nurse (any time before 5am-and after 7am) he is FINE. no problems.

  • Owen did that right around 4 months too except it was at 6 am, which I thought was awful, ha! I decided I did not want to send the message that getting up that early was acceptable, lol, so when he would wake up, I fed him and put him back in his crib wide awake. More often than not he would play for a bit, get crabby and cry a little, then go back to bed. I did this for like 3-4 weeks straight and now he doesnt get up before 7 am. When does he go to bed? You think its too early? O goes down between 7:30-8.

I love this and may have to steal it Smile

And my DD has been doing the 5 AM thing, too, but only for the last week or so. I'm hoping it was the stupid full moon and we'll get back to normal soon!

  • 730-8pm as well.

It is normal for him to get up 1x at night- most of the time around 2am to eat. That- i am totally cool with. Doesn't bother me at all.

It is the up from 5am until 8pm- that is really driving me into the ground.

  • That would drive me crazy, too!

Does he cry when he wakes up at 5am?  My son has also been waking up at 5am lately.  We let him babble for awhile and once he starts to sound fussy, my DH goes into his room and flips him onto his back (he's a stomach sleeper).  That will keep him content until 6:15 when we get up for the day, or this morning he fell asleep on his back and didn't wake again until 8am - yay!!!

  • have you tried a car ride?  That has always been my last resort for getting a nap on a bad day like that.
