Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those with tummy sleepers.

I guess this would apply to you guys LOL i dunno, any advice would help.  DD has just started rolling around in her crib. She was a very still sleeper until now. She will roll to her tummy but for some reason she freaks out and needs someone to roll her back. (she rolls over on her own both tummy to back and back to tummy when not in her crib.) Anyways... Shes never really liked sleeping on her tummy and never really been good at it, she would sleep like right on her face rather than turning her head when she was really little. Well i guess my question is... do you think i should be going in every time to roll her back over or should i give her the chance to calm down and possibly fall asleep on her tummy? We are in and out of her room probably 6 times flipping her over and sometimes she does it in the middle of the night... not that i mind getting up LOL it would just be nice not to have to. any thoughts??

Re: Those with tummy sleepers.

  • My son was the exact opposite - he started sleeping on his tummy at about 2-3 months of age.  I'd watch him and when he woke up on his back he'd jump and wake himself up.  He always had pretty good head control and when I flipped him on his tummy, he did so much better.  I'm not sure if he felt more secure that way but he sleeps better.

I worried that when he started rolling over that he would roll on his back and wake himself up again but so far that hasn't happened.  I guess you could wait a little before you go in to see if she goes back to sleep on her own but if she really hates it, she won't be happy to wake up and find herself on her tummy.  Does she like tummy time?  Maybe work on that more and she'll get more and more used to it.  Or practice rolling so that she can learn to roll herself back.

Not the greatest suggestions but at least this is something you know is temporary - she'll eventually figure it out.

  • My DD is doing something similar.  First of all, she's always hated being on her tummy, so I find it weird that all of a sudden she's rolling onto her tummy during the night.  At first it made me nervous and I would flip her, but now I figure, she makes the rules!  If she's comfortable, so be it!  BUT, she will still sometimes wake up aggravated that she's on her tummy! (She can roll back, but she just doesn't).  It's so frustrating!  I wish she would go back to sleeping soundly on her back like the good old days.

I guess I don't have much advice for you, just that we're doing something similar and I've pretty much left her alone to do her thing.  I've felt that if I flip her I'm disrupting her sleep and that she flipped onto her tummy for a reason in the first place.  GL!
