Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

I need some education.

I lost my baby on Thanksgiving.  I was only 6 weeks pregnant.  They told me that I could start trying again right away and that no medical intervention was necessary.  So we waited a month and started trying again. My last period started on Christmas Eve.  It was normal.  Well I am late, I knew that things could be screwy for a while but i took a test Saturday afternoon and it was negative.  I took another one Sunday morning and got a very faint positive.  It was a first response.  So I went to the doctors and got blood work done.  They told me that the home test wasn't reliable this soon after a m/c so not to get too excited (I am paraphrasing.  The put it nicer than that). The bloodwork came back this morning.  My HCG was at 20.  Too high to be a negative test,  too  low to say for sure if it's positive.  They said it should be in the 1000s.   So they want to see what the levels are doing.  In the event they don't sky rocket over the next week, what does it mean?   I asked this question and the nurse on the phone gave me a non answer answer.  The kind where she said lots of things but didn't answer my question.

  • TTCAL might have a better answer for you. I had similar numbers during my m/c so I don't have positive things to say about your numbers. Good luck!

  • Just hold off on getting your hopes up...even if you experience an MC, you can and probably will get pregnant again...so don't think this is the end of the world.

Pay attention to your body - if you experience any kind of severe pains, let your doctor know. HCG levels that are on the clear decline indicate MC, while numbers that jump around but gradually decline can also indicate MC. Ectopic pregnancies can sometimes have rising numbers in the beginning, and I know tend to be more erratic...but chances are you're not dealing with that right now.

Good luck, I hope you get good news!!! Remember, HPTs aren't too reliable as your urine is diluted at different times...and you really need more than one HCG blood draw to determine anything.

  • After re-reading your post - btw - it seems like you have no real reason to worry yet. There's no telling when you ovulated after your MC - maybe you're not as far a long as they think, and that's why you just had a 20 HCG.

Anyways, keep us posted if you want - gl

  • Thanks everyone.
