15 Month Appointment & Question About Tubes

Today she is 15 months old (WOW) and we had her well visit this morning.  Stats are all good - 23.5 lbs (63%), 30.5 inches (55%) and 18.5 head circ. (81%).  Doctor was pleased she's meeting all milestones.  However....

Two weeks ago we brought her in for a sick visit - she had a right ear infection and yeast infection.  She started doing much better once we started meds, but on about day 8 of the meds she started getting cold symptoms again.  Saturday was day 10 and the last day of the meds (augmentin).  Well, BOTH ears are - as the pedi said - fully infected.  He's not sure if the augmentin just didn't clear it, or if this is a new infection.  If it's new, this would be #5 since August.  Since she's sick, no shots today.  Her yeast infection is cleared but still has an irritated diaper rash - he recommended Triple Paste.  And I looked in her mouth and she has not just her molars coming in but the teeth in front of the molars and still working on the incisors - so she's got 6 teeth coming in right now!  After all this, she gave the pedi a hug before we left! He said it made his day.

So, my question....we're going to discuss tubes when we come back in two weeks.  I'd rather she get them than continually being on antibiotics.  Has anyone gone through the tube procedure for their LO?  Tell me about it - do they put them under?  Do they stay overnight in the hospital?  What is the recovery time?  Just trying to plan ahead with work, etc. (and emotionally as well!).

  • No personal experience with Ellie but from work and some good friends...Kids are sedated for the procedure, but it's typically pretty quick (less than 30 min) and they can go home that day.  When my best friend's girls got tubes, they were playing and happy that night - and even given the stress of the surgery, mom and dad were very happy since it meant no more constant antibiotics and ear infections.  GL - that is no fun!
  • My son had tubes placed in 2 times (3 months & they replaced them at 11 months).  But, they were during other procedures - so he was going under anyway. He was not getting ear infections & actually got his first ear infection post tubes (getting first tooth too). But he was having hearing issues.  The tubes are a very minor procedure, but of course anytime your child get's put under it is hard.  I think the procedure took about 5 mins.  His fell out on there own when he was 3 with no damage to the ear canal.

  • Ugh, sorry she is dealing with that.  And yes, my ENT told me that if there is an infection within 6 wks of another, it's the same infection flaring up because it takes 6wks for the inflammation to die down.  Comforting huh?  FWIW, there are a set of shots (rosefin(?), I think) that are antibiotic shots (DC can get up to 3 depending on how many it takes to clear up the ear infection) and can usually get rid of it.  Problem is the shot itself is very thick so hurts like a %$#!^ which is why they frontload it with lidocaine (which burns).  Nice.  But it can clear up the infection so worth asking about.  Also, sometimes going old school like bactrum (another antibiotic) will work.

Re the tubes, I've been through the procedure 3 times -- twice with DD and once with DS.  The child is put under only with gas because it is a VERY quick procedure.  Seriously, you will barely have time to get a cup of coffee before you're summoned back to recovery.  You will be able to go home the same day.  Mine were very disoriented, upset and downright POed coming out of the anesthesia, which is typical, but some tylenol and a nap later, were back to normal.  Both were able to go back to DC the next day.  Honestly, it'll be worse on you.  It can be uncomfortable for them afterwards with some popping and crackling as any remaining liquid drains out (they suction most of it out) but the recovery is really quick.  Honestly, best thing I did for my kids (because they needed it)!

  • Margaux has had clear ears, shockingly, but I had tubes when I was a baby.  My mom says it wasn't really all that big a recovery...

  • Congrats on a good appointment (growth/development wise).

Sorry you are dealing with ear infections. My sons didn't need tubes, but I have known several babies/toddlers who have had them placed and they have all done really well. The parents were very glad they got them. The surgery was quick and they bounced right back. One of the kids has a speach problem as an elementary school student because he didn't get them soon enough (thick fluid built up in his ears and he couldn't hear), so I think it's a good thing to go ahead and get them if the LO is prone to infections.
