I was taking about 1.4 mg per day, for two years, which was okay'd by my family doctor. I just saw the genetics doctor and she prescribed "PregVit" whic has 5 mg!!! Quite a jump in mg! So, since it's a prescription by the doctor who is trying to help me avoid more genetic problems & birth defects, I'm going to say this is a better amount than what I was taking before.
I love that you take Flintstones.

When pregnant, my doctor has me take 4 mg of folic acid on top of my pnv. When TTC, my doctor said the amount in the pnv is enough. Folic acid isn't something that you need to worry about taking too much of. Whatever your body doesn't absorb leaves your system in your urine.

After the loss my high risk OB put me on a double does of folic acid (1mg each) on top of my Prenatab prenatals...
so high risks should take double? i mean its not like its causing any harm to take more, but if i add more folic acid, i have to get the folic acid supplement, so i dont od on flintstones

I only started seeing him when we found out Jane was dying, he then took care of me during my postnatal journey ~~~ as for folic, he said that when a woman is pregnant the baby will deplete her body of any built up folic acid so its a great idea to start taking it right away if you are going to TTCAL... in addition he said that you can never have too much folic acid and its hella important... (he may not have used the term 'hella')
Hope that helps.
