Sib for Sophia?

DD is Sophia. I do love her name, but I cringe everytime I think about it ranking so high. It was DH's choice. Now I have demanded the majority of naming power for LO #2. I want something that sounds good with Sophia but, not on the top 50. I want feminine and pretty but not over the top with flowers and frills. I am mostly looking for girls' names, but I'm open to you boy suggestions too. :P  Last name is short, simple and incredible common.

Re: Sib for Sophia?

  • Cordelia or Portia are two of my favs... Embarrassed and I think they`d sound great with Sophia.

  • I have BEGGED for Portia. DH said it sounds like a pig. (pork?? idk) So I looked it up expecting some grand, Shakespearean meaning. I figured if I explained it meant "regal princess" or something, he change his tune. Then I pulled up hog/pig as the definition and had no argument. Still on my top 10 and I think it sounds GREAT with Sophia. Cordelia has also come up. DH just said "ehh". :P He CANNOT see past Emma, Ella, Ava and Olivia!

Portia was a great Shakespearean character. She was hands down the strongest female character in any of his plays (The Merchant of Venice). It is also an old roman clan name associated with pig farmers, but most name sites show the Shakespearean connection. The play was recently remade, maybe rent it with him and see if he changes his mind.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379889/

FYI the play is also the most anti-Semitic, so heads up. Tongue Tied The name Jessica also comes from this play. And Nerissa (we talked about using it for a second DD but will go with Aurelia if this lo is a girl).

I also love Rosalind from As You Like It. (Rosalind isn't even in the top 1000.)

Juliet is also another obvious Shakespearean name. :) That's surprisingly low at #319. Juliet and Sophia would be a great combo!

Ditto. I love Ophelia as well but I'd never  be able to get past how tragic the character was. Sad Shakespear had some great names. We used to have a great dane which I named Hamlet. Embarrassed

I love that name and I can overlook her tragic-ness and insanity, but I can't overlook the possible "I'll feel ya" remarks. haha Maybe that's just me. I do know someone who named their cat Ophelia recently. hehe :)

Yes. I just reread The Merchant a month or two ago. As Portia is one of my favorite Shakespeare ladies, I really expected a definition more in line with her character. Another *different* Shakespeare name I like but could never use is Desdemona (Othello). A name that may is hanging out onthe top 10 list for us is Cordelia (King Lear).

  • I have a Sophia too 11 months and 3 days (very close in age to yours) and we LOVE her name yes it's popular but it is a family name for us so I guess that helps but I know what you mean about being so popular!  I am like your DH I can't get past  Emma, Isabella or Elizabeth-all very popular but classic and so pretty. So, I say just go with the name you love no matter it's rank-she will be an individual no matter how many girls have that name!!!

  • We have a Sophia in our family and her younger sister is Janeen.

  • My daughter (14 months) is Gabrielle Sophia.  We thought they went together nice!  Just a thought!
