Babies: 3 - 6 Months

if you have hardwood floors...

What do you use to cushion your LO during playtime? DS' playmat was fine when he was laying on it, but now that he's sitting up and rolling around, it's not enough if he tips over. We have an area rug on top of the hardwood but it's still not as "cushion-y" as our carpeted areas.

I was thinking something like this, but was wondering if there's anything I can put under our area rug so that I don't have to change the whole look of the living room and I don't have to keeping putting those things out and packing them up.  Any ideas?

  • I'm looking for the same kind of thing, but I read that a lot of those mats have chemicals in them that are even banned in other countries.  Buy Buy Baby has one that is free of that chemical: https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=14924272&

  • My sister had a twin bed sized memory foam bed topper, that she doesn't use anymore, so that's what I use for LO.

  • I throw an old comforter down on the floor with the play-mat on top. Does the trick (and no cost).

Thanks, I didn't know about the chemical aspect, will keep that in mind!

I guess I'm a bad mom because I just put him on the play mat on the rug (we have this: https://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pcat=buocean&pid=49716).

I usually roll up a towel for his neck if he's going to be on his back or chest if he's going to be on his tummy.

Our whole house is hardwood floors.  I have huge rug in our living room and a rug near DS' crib.

Otherwise, DS is in a Boppy, Bumbo, or his rocker.  He only has limited floor time now, when he starts sitting up I reckon I'll just start setting up cushy blankets with the boppy all over the place.

We have that same play mat at my mom's house, and it was fine at 3/4 months. But now he wants to sit up and have a bunch of toys around him, but he still tips over... I just put cushions all around him but it's not practical.

  • I have a small rug ( i have to move the table to use it) and i have a few 4 foot (sq) thick blankets that i pile on top of each other to make it padded. It's enough room for now.

Isn't that kid in the ad a bit old for tummy time?!  Haha, JK!

  • I just use the rug for now, but I remember when DD started to sit up on her own more I would just put the boppy behind her to kind of brace her so if she fell backward she didn't hit her head. She got through that unsteady phase quick though, and then I never used anything.

  • I was thinking about posting a similar thread, except I have concrete floors. These links are great. Thanks, ladies!
  • there are pads you can get for underneath area rugs that help add cushion, if you want something a little more permanent and out-of-sight. This picture is off Overstock.com but google "rug pads" and you should be able to find a ton.

  • We just put her on the rugs.  We have area rugs in the family room, living room, and her room and they are all pretty thick, so it's not a problem.
