F/U to not talking at 16 months

I took Jack to the pedi today, fully expecting him to say that I am over reacting.  Instead he said that he agreed not talking at 16 months was a bit delayed, but he did say it could be on the lower end of normal and he wouldn't label it as anything to be really concerned about yet.  He said most babies are at least saying mama or dada by this age.  He referred Jack to the local children's hospital for hearing and vision testing.  After that he will be evaluated by Babies Can't Wait for early intervention.  Thanks for all the support last night.  I have no doubt he will be fine with just a bit of help.  Left HugRight Hug

  • You have such good mommy radar! Good for you for taking him to the doctor.

If Jack needs some help, it sounds like he will be in the perfect place! Left Hug

ETA: we're currently having J evaluated. I'm really excited to have some answers and tools to help him developmentally. Good stuff!

  • I'm glad you spoke to the doctor and that he's being proactive without being an alarmist. I also think he'll be fine with just a little extra push and hope that the evaluation goes well.

You're such a good mother, Shelley. I can see that from your posts and Jack and Pumpkin are lucky to have you.

  • Shelley... what did your pedi consider "words?"   Charlie jabbers all the time, but I don't know how much of that is coherant enough to consider a "word."   Do they have to speak clearly and often, or just once in a while?  He'll also repeat us sometimes, but it's not like he knows what he's saying.

We have our 15 mo. pedi appt on Friday, so I'm sure we'll be talking about this.

  • *Bride Buddies* - My daughter was not talking at all when we went for her 15mos. appt.  Our pedi just asked us if she could follow instructions or seem to understand what we were saying.  She was totally fine when we said answer yes that DD seems to comprehend what we're saying.

DD finally started saying a couple of words right around 16 mos.  She's now up to 15 or so (of course only we can understand/translate most of them).

The pedi said most babies Jack's age can say a few words, or at least something.  He asked me if Jack says no, mama, dada, dog, makes animal noises or tries to repeat things he hears me say.  No, he does none of that.  Jack used to jabber, but he doesn't do that anymore either.  The only noises he makes are laughing, grunts, whines, and crying.  If Jack had one or two words in his vocabulary, I wouldn't be concerned, and I don't think the pedi would be either.

  • Mommy radar is always right.  Glad to hear that the doctor didn't think it was too bad, but wanted to get Jack checked out anyways.  I'm sure it will all be okay - he is just taking his time.

I think that the loss of jabbering is probably what got his attention rather than the lack of speech.  Losing skills is of more concern than not having them in the first place.  That being said, developmental specialists can do wonders with children.

  • You had faith & believed in Jack right from in-utero. He'll be fine no matter what.

  • Good for you for following your mommy instincts. I am glad the pedi was not overly worried but also good that he listened to your concerns and is acting on them.

  • I just read your other post and ummm, yeah, I would have done the same thing as i'm sure many of us on here would have also.  Always trust your instincts, even if they are wrong in the end.  what do you care what people think?  you did what you had to do for your child.  I personally don't care how many times I go to the pedi and what they think of me, like i'm some crazy mom who thinks her child is always sick.  90% of the time, i'm right.  N has had a lot of ear infections and it scares me to death as I personally know a woman who lost her hearing due to untreated ear infections. So yeah, excellent job mama!   :o)
