Hi there, next week would have been my nephew's first birthday. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a gift idea for my brother and his wife. TIA

Honestly, just a card and recognizing the birthday should be enough. If you wanted to get them flowers or a tree they could plant in honor of their son, i'm sure that they'd love it.  (((hugs))) to your brother and SIL.

It's really great that you want to do something.  Have they started a fund of any kind?  We started a fieldtrip fund with a local non-profit in our son's name.  If so, a contribution to that would be nice.  A tree would be neat, depending on if that would work in their climate.  A card and maybe a gift certificate for a dinner out would be awesome.
