Kettlebells

Does anyone use kettlebells? If so, do you find you are having problems with bruising on your wrists? How do you prevent that?

If not, you should look into it, it's a great workout!

Re: Kettlebells

  • Bruising on wrists?  No...how do you get bruising on wrists?  I've never had that problem...

  • Well, it's more my forearm I guess. Where the bell rests when doing a thread grip (I think that's what it's called anyway...)

  • My DH does kettlebells. The first few weeks he did it he had bruises on his forearms from certain moves/lifts. He says it something you have to deal with in the beginning. But you can wear wrist bands to help lessen the impact.

    He loves it though!

  • I have heard of this issue. Yesterday I did 100 KB swings 35# and have no bruises though. I guess if you wear those fabric sweat bands on your wrists, that might help! Love KBs :)
  • 35 lbs! I bow down to you!

  • I use kettlebells - it could be from the way that you are gripping the kettlebell.  It has to do with weight distribution of the kettlebell.  You want to start by grabbing the bell in the corner, so that when you lift it up and open your hand it looks like it is resting diagonally.

When lifting the kettlebell, you want to make sure that you aren't gripping the kettlebell too tight.  The less friction with your skin, the better so keep your grip loose.  Also, you want to "spear" the handle at the end of your lift and keep your wrist straight.

Are you doing an exercise video for these?  I have heard that some of the videos give really poor instruction on how to handle a kettlebell.  I have also read that some videos, specifically Jillian Michaels, actually show improper form when handling a kettlebell that could lead to injury.

I liked this video that explained handling the bell properly...

  • Thanks for the advice Tomkat, I will check for form today.

I am using a video, the ones created by Paul Katami. He is supposed to be very good as far as KB's go. It's funny that you say that about the Jillian video though, I was talking about that with my brother the other day. He's a Crossfit whore, so he's all about KB's. I showed him a clip of the Jillian video, and he started going off on her crappy form and how her bell isn't nearly as heavy as it should be because of the way she was carrying it. It was hilarious.

He got me to download some stuff from Pavel Tsastouline (sp?), but I'm not sure I can stomach it. Father of KB's in America or not, his stuff is cheesy as hell!

  • If your brother is into it, I am sure that he knows the proper form and can let you know if you are doing it correctly too.  Face-to-face is a million times better than any video, IMO.

    Good luck!

  • When I first started doing them I also used to get buising on my wrists. It is definitely due to poor technique. The clean and press or snatch movements where you flip the kb over your hand and it rests there, you should use a lot of control so that it does not smack your wrist. However, you don't want to hold too tight as that can lead to tearing on your hands. I would really recommend learning technique from an RKC certified instructor instead of just watching a video. You will be surprised how much they can show you about how better technique really enhances your kb workouts! Good luck.
