Can someone explain mesh underwear?

I read in one of the posts below about "amazing mesh underwear" post-childbirth.  I feel like and idiot - but why are these important??  Thanks!

Re: Can someone explain mesh underwear?

  • The hospital will give you these after birth to hold the enormous pads. The mesh undies are super comfortable-though not the most stylish, lol.

  • The pads you wear in the hospital make always look small. Plus they stretch to fit all sizes of ladies. They are basically disposable underwear.

  • They're just lighter and airier than regular underwear and some people love that. They're also disposable so you don't wreck your good underwear.

I wasn't really a fan. I had the hospital pair meshies on for like four hours then found my granny panties that I bought on clearance and tossed when I was done.

    It's a comfort thing.

  • They are mesh underpants (granny panties" that the hospital gives you.

I've never worn them (this is my first LO), but many women like them because they are soft and don't chafe and because you can fit the gigantic pads in them after birth and during labor.

  • Because they are comfortable, disposable and won't be ruined by blood.

  • Oh my did I block a lot out from DD birth.  After you wrote this post it brought back the memories of post birth :)  They give you mesh underwear after delievery that is to keep the ice pack and huge pads under control, it helps with the ice for sure!  You will be very happy with these!  I think I wore them just for the three days in the hospital and then I went home and was able to wear big granny panties! :)

  • Definately wear the mesh underwear - and take any extra home!!! Why ruin any of your underwear-ruin the free stuff! Especially post c-section b/c you might find that underwear you have at home seems to hit right at the incision line! Go figure!

Wow!  Thanks ladies.  The visual helped, too.

I guess I never really thought about the "after-math"!  I didn't think about ice packs either!  Wow, I have a lot to learn. :)

  • They look like they're barely there and gigantic, but they're wonderful at keeping in the ginormous kotex in place without causing any pain in the lower half of your body. I also highly recommend tucks pads and taking home the peri bottle they give you.

And wouldn't it be nice if this is what our immediately post labor body would look like?

  • As a PSA, these are "one-sizers" (or at least mine were).I am 5'7" and I weighed about 170 pre-pregnancy, and over 200 at the birth of DD. They did not fit me well...the nurse had to cut slits in the sides to accommodate my juicy thighs lol. I had juicy thighs before getting pg and then 40 lbs later, they were definitely large! I didn't like wearing them. They made me feel even more fat and disgusting.

With this pg, I weigh 145 to start but I still think I will just bring some walmart or target granny panties to wear that I don't care about throwing away if they get ruined.

I'm not sure that is sanitary or that I would be comfortable doing this in my own home.  You are going to bleed for quite some time, not just a day and then it stops.

I was thinking the same thing.  She looks really good!

  • They're a train wreck and def should never be distributed again! I suggest taking your own comfy panties you don't mind throwing away if they get bloody and bringing your own long, overnight style pads for post partum. Ugh, those mesh panties were the worst!
  • I was actually a fan of the mesh underwear....but I had stitches both times and had a ice pack, pad, and tucks pads in there....even the biggest undies I own couldn't fit all that stuff :)  I even took a few extra pairs home.
