Are you buying crib rails for conversion bed?

Okay I'm debating not getting the rails but using a mattress frame and bed skirt instead when the time comes.  The rails are $116 and it seems a little silly, I even read some reviews that described the rails as being made wrong as they had to drill their own holes after all.

Anyone convert theirs yet?

Thanks!

Re: Are you buying crib rails for conversion bed?

  • Whoa that's insane expensive!  We bought the bed rails when we bought the crib and they were $20!

I would skip it for sure and hey, most mattress companies offer free bed rails when you buy a mattress anyway!  ;)

  • If you are talking about converting a crib to a toddler bed, we have.  We didn't but the conversion kit because it was so expensive.  Instead, we bought this instead and love it.  Ds has fallen out of bed twice in the 6 months he's been using it, but he had been hanging halfway over it already when we checked on him.  There is no way I would not have some sort of bumper type thing though.  That company was great with customer service too!

  • I didn't buy the conversion rails and when I went to order them last week I realized have been on backorder for a year. We went ahead and took off the front of the crib and bought a generic mesh rail from babies r us. It has worked really well so far. When we convert it to the full bed, I will just get the rails from the mattress store.
  • We got the conversion rails for when we convert it into a full size, bought them at the same time as the crib.

We've bought a couple new mattresses in the last few years and they didn't come with frames (maybe some do, some don't). We liked that the rails matched the crib (wooden & stained the same color). Sometimes the bedding doesn't quite reach the edge and I'd rather see a nice wood frame rather than a metal one, but that's me. I also don't like bedskirts. Yeah, I know, I'm picky.

  • Ours came with the railing and we had it up for a little while but took them off because she kept hitting her head and getting caught on them more than falling out of her bed. She did fall out a few times but after that, no more. We have a weird set up in the girls room and so for us it works better without the rails. We have a really small home and I can't wait until we move! DD#3 is 19 months.
