trains, cabs and subways

I am thinking about taking a trip to see family in Toronto.  If DH can't drive me i was thinking i would take the train in and use the subway.  Is this hard to do with a stroller?  Mine isn't light- but it is easy to manuvere so if i don't have to fold it up it would be okay.

Also do you need a car seat for a cab?  i really dont want to take a car seat and the bas- if i ende up taking a cab to the station.

I live in NYC and I've found that the best way to take DD around town using mass transit is with a carrier, like an Ergo or Beco.  You could use a stroller, but it's hard if you're taking subways that are underground and require going down stairs (especially if your DH isn't with you).  I've never taken DD in a cab, so I don't know if you need a car seat.  It's probably a good idea for safety reasons, but I've never actually seen someone lug their car seat and base around here.

Most public transportation by law (cabs, shuttles, buses, etc) don't require that a child be in a carseat. I guess it depends on your own comfort level. We are taking DS to Vegas next week. We were going to take a cab to the airport from home but we would have to get on a major highway and I didn't feel comfortable doing that without LO in a carseat (not getting his own seat on the plane so we're not bringing carseat at all). In Vegas the airport is pretty close to the hotel and its only back roads. Its irrational, but I just feel better on lower speed limit roads without him in a car seat. I will however have a death grip on him the whole ride

I live in Brooklyn Heights and use public transportation regularly.  I will take the stroller on the subway (I have the CityMini) but I make sure that I am going to stops that have an elevator.  I wouldn't be able to carry it up and down steps.  Also, for cab rides, I either put her in the bjourn and buckle up or else I take the car seat (Maxi-Cosi infant carrier) which can be very easily buckled in with the seatbelt without the base).  Good luck!

I would not be comfortable having DD in a cab with no carseat. I mean, it's still a car...

Oh your post made me feel better- i almost bought the city mini b/c it is so light.  But i ended up buy a larger heavier one (countour 3) so I could take it on trails around my house.   But I was starting to wish I got the mini for trips like this and travel.  Maybe when I get back working I might pick it up for things such as this.

I have a stroller since I have 2u2 its the only way and I live in the DC area and take it on the train all the time. The under ground stations have elevators so its never been an issue. There is no way I could take a cab
