Do I need the conversion rails for my lifetime crib?

Okay I'm debating not getting the rails but using a mattress frame and bed skirt instead when the time comes.  The rails are $116 and it seems a little silly, I even read some reviews that described the rails as being made wrong as they had to drill their own holes after all. 

Anyone convert theirs yet?

We didnt get them for ds#1's crib and I am glad I didn't. We didn't use them.
