Postpartum Depression

Zoloft day one.

How quickly did you see results? I just took my first dose.

Do you find that it affects your sleeping? And therefore, do you take it in the morning or at night based on that?

How did you feel in the first few days/weeks of taking it? I don't really know what to expect.

I'm kind of nervous. I don't want to experience one of those 'it gets worse before it gets better' scenarios.

I am taking 50 mg.

Re: Zoloft day one.

  • My OB started me on 50 mg. The pharmacist told me I could take it either morning or night, it didn't matter, so I took my first pill in the morning. I felt like I had taken a sleeping pill and was OUT by 2pm (luckily the girls were napping!). When I woke up, I basically felt like I was having a super long panic attack (heart pounding, shaking, mind racing, etc..) and I couldn't get back to sleep until 4am! It was awful.

I was afraid to take another pill. After talking to a couple friends and reading online (because my OB didn't call me back), I decided to take it at night only and to cut the pill in half and take only 25mg for a week to get my body used to it.

I started again 3 weeks ago. By day 6 I was feeling SO much better! I even posted on here about it working so quickly. I'm on it mostly for anxiety but I've noticed I just feel so much more ....mellow... in general. It's really amazing, and wonderful. I feel like "me" again. I'm now back up to the 50 mg and since starting it and building my way up, I haven't had any side-effects like I did with that first pill.

I did find that the first 3-4 days I got headaches all day long, but it wasn't anything some Tylenol didn't take care of. When I upped my dose, I had a headache the first day and that was it. The only other side-effect I've noticed was night sweats. Ick. But fine to deal with. It does still make me drowsy, at night. I wake up feeling fine in the morning. And it hasn't kept me awake like it did that first time.

GL to you. I hope it works out well :)

  • I have a question did they start you off immediately on 50 mg? If so you may want to try taking 1/2 in the am and 1/2 at night if the pill breaks in half. Just seems like a high dose to start on esp if you are taking it only once a day. They started me on 40 mg of celexa but was too high and made me so tired so they said to try 10 mg in the am and 10 in the pm and could increase if i needed.

I took the 50 mg pill (yes, that's what they started me on) about 2 hours ago. I am beginning to feel a bit drowsy, I guess. Nothing too severe, certainly not as sleep as a Tylenol PM would have ever made me in the past. I feel a little spacey, though. This will take some adjusting.

My DH used to be on Zoloft, and he had issues with sleeping at night if he took it too late in the day. It may be the opposite for me, we will see.

  • I am honestly surprised that he didn't have you work up to the 50mg.  Usually you take 25mg for the first couple of days to get your body used to it and then go up to the 50mg.  You might want to try this.  As PP said, some people experience extreme tiredness on Zoloft - if this happens, take it at night.  This was NOT the case with me.  I took it every morning.  The one thing my pharmacist did tell me is to make sure you take it around the same time every day.  The other thing, if it makes you not be able to sleep which happens with some people, my MW suggested taking it just after breakfast.

I noticed a difference within the first week.  However, my MW said it can take 2-4 weeks for it to fully take effect.  My zoloft really helped me.  With that being said, not every antidepressant works for everyone.  I'm not trying to be a "downer" I'm just trying to be realistic.  I really hope it works for you, and I hope it works as fast as it did for me.  I just want you to realize that it might take a while, and it might take trying a few different medications.  No matter what, I don't want you to give up.  Your happiness is too important!  GL!!!
