XP: ?s about thrush

I also posted this on the BFing board, but thought I would post over here to get some input from my fellow December moms.

I am pretty much an EPer as BFing just didn't work out for us. I felt as though I had some of the symptoms of thrush and called my LC on Friday, but now I think I may have been overreacting. She recommended that I sterilize my pump parts after every session (in addition to cleaning) so now that I am using the steam bags, the itching that I had has pretty much gone away. I am thinking that I might have had a reaction to the soap I was using. Also, I noticed that the sharp pains I have seem to happen about an hour after I pump or right before it is time to pump. I only get a couple of shooting pains and then it goes away. Other than that, my nipples are pink, but the LC said that may happen when pumping.

So my questions are:

When you had the breast pain, was it pretty consistent? Or did it happen at a certain time?  Was it pretty obvious that you had thrush? Did you have any other symptoms?

  • My nips just look a little pink and the shooting pains are not all the time, no.

  • My nipples were just really pink and I had the shooting pains at random times as well as pain during every nursing session (like toe curling, bring tears to your eyes pain) but pain isn't always present.  A had zero symptoms.

If you think you might have thrush but don't want to take a medication, I would totally 100% recommend taking a probiotic daily and start taking Grapefruit Seed Extract Capsules (Whole Foods) orally 3x daily and use the liquid version in a nipple rinse 2x daily.  I was on Newman's APNO for 5 days and it did nothing, as soon as I started the Grapefruit seed Extract (per Newman's website and Kellymom) it started clearing up right away.

Yikes! It sounds like symptoms are all over the place for everyone.

Lulu, thanks for the info. Did you do that instead of taking meds? I am so tired of taking medications at this point. I will try your suggestions for a couple of days and call the OB if I am not feeling better. My LO doesn't seem to have any symptoms. His tongue is a little white, but I am thinking it is just from milk.

The only medication that I was prescribed was the Newman's Nipple Ointment which most people swear by but I didn't have good luck with it.  My OB was fine with me trying the Grapefruit Seed Extract and said he would prescribe something else if I found that it didn't work...luckily, it did!
