Questions about first appointment

Hi there,

I just got my BFP on Friday and joined the boards today!  I called for my first prenatal appointment earlier today.  They said they like to wait until about 8 weeks to see me, which I know is pretty common.  They based on on my last AF though, so I will actually be sneaking in at about 6.5 weeks Devil.

The receptionist told me it would take about 30 minutes, but when I asked what it would entail she said she didn't know, the doctors didn't tell them.  So I am wondering:

1) What does usually happen at the first appointment - will I get an ultrasound?  Will there be bloodwork?  Or will I just be handed a list of what to do/not do?

2) Is it normal for a receptionist to have no idea what to tell me when I ask what to expect at my first appointment?  I have been going to my OBGYN for 2 years now just for my annual exam and I like her, but I'm not sure what to expect as far as prenatal appointments go.  I'm worried that if I call with a question no one will be able to help me.

TIA!

ETA another question - Did your DH/SO go with you to the first appointment?

Re: Questions about first appointment

  • At my OB the first appointment is usually blood pressure, weight, pee in a cup, physical exam and pap.   They schedule for bloodwork also.  I am surprised the receptionist didn't know what to tell you.  Sometimes depending on the OB you may have a transvaginal ultrasound.

  • My 1st appt was today at 9 wks 1 day.

First I peed in a cup.  Followed by.....

    ultrasound

    quick meeting w/ Nurse Practioner

    blood draw

Next appt is scheduled in 4 weeks - med history + pelic exam

  • Thanks for the responses!  Looks like the first appointment really varies by doctor.  Another question I forgot to ask - did your DH/SO go with you to the first appointment?  If we area having an ultrasound I know he will want to be there, but I can't imagine him caring about watching me get my blood pressure taken or anything like that.
  • my first was at 6w2d & it was just a "confirmation" appointment. They took my weight & blood pressure. I didn't even have to give a sample of urine or blood. But they did a transvaginal ultrasound & a mini pelvic exam to "confirm". I guess at my 10wk appointment is when they'll do bloodwork & medical history. Congrats :)

  • At my OB, my first visit is an hour long with a nurse practitioner and 5 viles of blood drawn.  A lot of medhistory from both mine and DH side so it was helpful that DH was there.  My second appt is with the dr and they do a pap and try to hear heartbeat.  With this baby they will be doing an u/s at this appt but only bc I had an ectopic over the summer and they want to make sure baby sac is in the right spot.  Most OB's will only do one u/s at the 20 weeks.

  • At my first (7w4d), they checked my vitals, took a medical history, did a pelvic exam (I had a pap in sept.), did a TV ultrasound, took a bunch of blood, and gave me a huge sack of prenatal vitamin samples.

My DH did go with me - he's a doctor so he likes going and hearing everything and talking to the OB himself.

  •  At my first one they drew blood, took urine, blood pressure and lots of questions about health in my family, etc. They also gave us the EDD. The receptionist should know what it involves. If she doesn't, ask to speak to a nurse. My husband went to the 1st and 2nd appointments. I think that's important.
  • I went for my first one today. I had to fill out a bunch of forms about my history and family history, read some literature, sign some papers. They weighed me, asked me when my last period was, asked if I had any spotting or anything, they took a urine sample, they did a pap and he checked to see if I had any soreness, and used his fingers to feel to see how big my uterus is and he confirmed that I'm at 8 weeks. He told me what to do and what not to do, what not to eat, blah blah blah, and gave me a BUNCH of samples of prenatal vitamins, we talked about my current medications and then scheduled to have some bloodwork done, and then scheduled two more appointments. One to follow up and check my belly measurements and another to do my sonogram.
