Nanny Taxes/Withholding

Hey All!

We hired a nanny and I'm trying to make sure I stay in compliance with taxes and all that jazz.

Anyone have experience with officially filing as an employer and exactly what's legally required in MN?

So far-

I have an Employee ID Number, started a workers comp policy, reported a new hire, and am withholding social security/Medicare.

Am not withholding anything Federal or State.  Is that right?  Also- I do have a w-4 from her that says she wants to claim one.  So do I have to withhold more than just social security and medicare??

Even if you don't know the answers and can point me to someone that does, I'd be greatly appreciative!!

Tara

I would contact a locale tax accounted and discard post above as it is a vendor post.

Looks like you have done your homework and are off to a good start!!  You're right, you do not need to withhold Federal or State income taxes for a household employee.  However, since she gave you a W-4 form, it sounds like she's interested in having you withhold it.  You will want to confirm that with her and  make sure you provide something to her in writing, indicating whether or not you will withhold.  If you do not withhold it, she'll be responsible for paying it in.  There are services out there that can help you, if you haven't already reached out to one to get any questions you may have answered.  EDITED FOR SPAM  There's a lot of information available but you've done a lot of the leg work already!
