S/O: humidifier question

Do you use tap water or distilled water in your humidifier?

We have been using tap water and are getting white dust everywhere.  I think it is because we have hard water and our humidifier is filter-less.  I am wondering if distilled water would work better.

Thanks!

Re: S/O: humidifier question

  • We use tap water but we have a whole house filter and softener. We do get white stuff in it, but I clean it out about once a week. It doesn't seem to affect the way the humifier runs or anything.

  • We use tap water and the humidifier has a filter.  I may go a little overboard, but I wash it out daily.  It's part of the bedtime routine.  She plays in her crib and I wash it out w/ hot water.  I also rinse the filter.  In the mornings I turn it off when she gets up.  I use the same water for naptime.  Then rinse everything again at bedtime.

Every other week or so I'll wash it out real good w/ bleach.  I buy a new filter every other month or after she's had a bad cold.

It may be a little bit overboard. But, I've never seen any white dust.

(We do get that white buildup on our refrigerator and iron, so I know what you're talking about.)
