How many hours of sleep for your 4-5 year old?

Bella still needs about 12 hours, but I'm thinking Ethan needs more like 10-10.5. How much does your kid this age get per day? Do you think it's enough?

  • Gracie needs 12.  My 7 y/o and 10 y/o still need 10ish.

  • DD is almost 5 and she sleeps a solid 12 hours a night. From time to time she seems tired but for the most part she functions pretty well on 12 hours. Our problem is letting her sleep too late in the mornings. She regularly sleeps until 9:30 AM meaning she isn't quite ready for bed until 9:30 at night. I'd like her to be going to bed earlier but I know I need to be getting her up in order to do so.

  • 12 is ideal.  He can get by on 11 for a couple of days but then will sleep 13 to catch up.

  • I guess I was wrong about Ethan! He has always needed a ton of sleep--got 14 hours until the last 6 months or so. He was always the first to sleep and the last one up. These days he doesn't fall asleep until 9 and is up by 7. The girls are in bed at 7 and I have been letting him read books until 8 because he can't fall sleep, and then he lays there and tosses and turns for an hour before he goes to sleep. He does not ever sleep past 7:30 any more.
  • Gretchen's in bed between 8 and 8:30 and is generally up right at 7:00 (there's a clock in her room and she knows she can't come out 'til 7).  So I'm guessing she gets 10-11 hours depending on when she actually falls asleep and wakes up.

Occasionally she sleeps in, but never as late as 8.

  • Gavin is 4 and sleeps about 13 hours.  From 8 pm - 7 am and a 1.5-2 hour nap in the afternoon.  I think it is enough for him...he needs the nap still or is quite unpleasant to be around!

  • On a day with no nap, he will sleep 9 hours max. Same with my 3-yr-old. I am being punished for prior sins I suppose. How did I get two kids that don't sleep much?

At night they sleep about 10-11hrs.  They then nap about 1.5hrs during the day.  L even naps at school still (k) each day.  He has always needed more sleep than the girls.  He will ask if its bedtime almost every night around 7:30.  I have put him to bed at 7:15 before because he is super tired and sitting on the couch half asleep.  At least 2 nights a week he goes to bed early.  Normally its 8-7:30.

My 4yr olds are a different story.  They would stay up til 11pm nightly if allowed.  I have to get onto them to quiet down at least twice a night to get them to sleep.

  • About 11 for my 3 and 5 y/o.  DS can get by with 10 for a day, but more than that and it's not pretty.  He's way more tired since he started KG.

  • DD (5) sleeps around 11 hours at night.  No nap.

  • She gets about 8-9hrs of sleep at night, on a good night. ?She wakes up normally at least twice. ?She naps maybe twice a week, but when she does she crashes for a good 2-3 hours.

She NEEDS about 11hrs but is so frantic about missing something that she only naps if I make her.

  • Rachel gets about 10 on a weeknight, 12-13 on the weekend. No naps. I couldn't get this kid to nap if I paid her in candy and ice cream.

  • Brooke sleeps around 9-11 hours and hasn't napped in years. She's actually always been OK on little sleep, she's never been much of a sleeper.

  • My 4 1/2 year old gets about 10-12 at night and I would say about half the time she will take a 1-2 hour nap so I would guess on average it is 12-13 hours a day and she does great.  On the days that she naps, she has a harder time falling asleep so during the week when we want her asleep on the eaerilier side, we really limit her nap to either just resting or 1 hour max if that makes sense.  On most days, she could be totally fine with no nap and around 11 hours at night.

  • During the week it's probably around 11hrs per night with no naps. I don't think that is nearly enough for her, but she refuses to nap for the sitter. She tends to play catch up on the weekends and will sleep 13hrs overnight plus sometimes a 2-3hr nap on top of that.
