Does anyone use the Ultimate Crib Sheet?

For our crib, I've ordered the mattress and bought sheets, but I'm trying to figure out what to buy in terms of a mattress pad or waterproof layer.

The Baby Bargains book recommends a sheet protector that goes OVER the sheet, specifically the Basic Comfort Ultimate Crib Sheet.  I've never heard of this- a protector on top of the regular sheet.  Does anyone here use this?

If not, what do you recommend as far as an additional layer in the crib?  Or do you just put the crib sheet directly on the mattress?

TIA...

Re: Does anyone use the Ultimate Crib Sheet?

  • We've just used a waterproof mattress pad and regular fitted sheets. It's worked great for us. One little thing that was awesome- these things called "lap pads", I put them on top of the changing table pad & cover. They are waterproof and are great for catching all those wonderful newborn blow outs that always happen when you are changing them. It's much easier to throw those in the laundry than have to change the entire pad sheet. :-)

  • I don't have experience with that specific sheet, however we do have an organic quilted mattress pad that goes under the sheet. Then we also got several flat pads to go over the sheet. These are very helpful for spitup issues. G was/is a very spitty baby (he has reflux) so we were constantly having to replace these flat pads. It is so much easier than having to change the sheets multiple times. We also use them on the changing table so we're not constantly having to change the cover on the pad.

I can't find the exact item we have, but these are essentially what I'm talking about

it looks like the ultimate crib sheet serves the same purpose.

  • all I've ever used is a regular mattress pad and fitted sheets.  I registered for the ultimate crib sheet since it looked neat but we didn't get it and we've survived just fine without it.

  • I bought it, tried it, decided it was way too hard to manage all the snaps, and returned it.  We use flannel waterproof pads (the ones I have are almost the size of the mattress but they're flat, not like a fitted mattress pad) and fitted sheets.  I have them layered (I know, BB tells you not to but the pads are not padded so it's not adding padding to the mattress) .  When I need to change the sheet, I just pull off the top sheet and waterproof pad.  The bottom sheet is a different design so I know when I'm to the bottom.
  • I have those and use them regularly.  I wouldn't have thought to buy them, but they were given to me.

They are much easier to change than crib sheets.  The mattress fits so tightly into the crib (I assume for safety reasons), that it's hard to get sheets on and off.  These just snap around the railing.  In the middle of the night, if there is a mess, you can just snap if off and let baby finish the night on the sheet below (I don't have any layers under the sheet because our mattress is waterproof).

I have 2.  One to use, one to wash.

  • I LOVED these. So easy. All I needed to do to wash was unsnap and go. I rarely, if ever, had to actually change the sheet and mattress pad because all was contained by the Ultimate Crib Sheet. I had 3 and they were used in rotation.

I had the UCS on top of the fitted crib sheet/matress pad because I liked the look of the crib bedding set we bought and didn't want to sacrifice cuteness for practicality :)

  • Thank you all, that's really helpful!  So it sounds like it's based on personal preference- some did fine without it, some really liked it.  I suppose I'll put two on the registry and see if we get them, since our mattress is going to be VERY snug in our crib.

    Thank you!
