For our crib, I've ordered the mattress and bought sheets, but I'm trying to figure out what to buy in terms of a mattress pad or waterproof layer.
The Baby Bargains book recommends a sheet protector that goes OVER the sheet, specifically the Basic Comfort Ultimate Crib Sheet. I've never heard of this- a protector on top of the regular sheet. Does anyone here use this?
If not, what do you recommend as far as an additional layer in the crib? Or do you just put the crib sheet directly on the mattress?
TIA...
Re: Does anyone use the Ultimate Crib Sheet?
I don't have experience with that specific sheet, however we do have an organic quilted mattress pad that goes under the sheet. Then we also got several flat pads to go over the sheet. These are very helpful for spitup issues. G was/is a very spitty baby (he has reflux) so we were constantly having to replace these flat pads. It is so much easier than having to change the sheets multiple times. We also use them on the changing table so we're not constantly having to change the cover on the pad.
I can't find the exact item we have, but these are essentially what I'm talking about

it looks like the ultimate crib sheet serves the same purpose.
I have those and use them regularly. I wouldn't have thought to buy them, but they were given to me.
They are much easier to change than crib sheets. The mattress fits so tightly into the crib (I assume for safety reasons), that it's hard to get sheets on and off. These just snap around the railing. In the middle of the night, if there is a mess, you can just snap if off and let baby finish the night on the sheet below (I don't have any layers under the sheet because our mattress is waterproof).
I have 2. One to use, one to wash.
I LOVED these. So easy. All I needed to do to wash was unsnap and go. I rarely, if ever, had to actually change the sheet and mattress pad because all was contained by the Ultimate Crib Sheet. I had 3 and they were used in rotation.
I had the UCS on top of the fitted crib sheet/matress pad because I liked the look of the crib bedding set we bought and didn't want to sacrifice cuteness for practicality
Thank you all, that's really helpful! So it sounds like it's based on personal preference- some did fine without it, some really liked it. I suppose I'll put two on the registry and see if we get them, since our mattress is going to be VERY snug in our crib.
Thank you!
