Cloth Diapering

I just did an Excel spreadsheet...

Gulp. I've spent more than I thought. I just started CDing my son when he was 9 months. So, in 4 months, I have spent $371 and just last night, I think I have completed my stash. Before yesterday, I only had 10 pocket dipes and needed to use 2-3 sposies every 2 days when I was washing the CDs. Now, I won't have to do that.

I was so excited to show DH before I ran the numbers. Then, when I did, it was more than I thought. I know it's an upfront cost. I just hope these dipes last through our 2nd child.

  • If that's all you spent, you're doing fine! Its an investment. You're saving in the long run and its also better for DS.

  • I know that I have spent more than that Sad  There were so many extras and I didn't realize that I would want to try different things.  Plus, it has just been so fun!  We spent about $300 of "baby budget" money and then everything from there has been out of my monthly spending money.

I think its worth it though!  And, I really do hope to use them for future children.

  • I'd say thats pretty good. I don't even have an outside baby and I've spent more than that and I am not sure my "infant" stash is complete.

I just started researching and lurking on this board (my 2nd post) and this is one of my concerns.  How many different types of NB CD should I get to make sure there are at least a few that will fit Baby C correctly?

It really depends on how often you want to do laundry. You could go through 12-15 nb diapers a day. My goal is laundry every other day with a little wiggle room if it takes too long. I have 30 nb diapers. Once they get older you go through less diapers so I am shooting for around 24. But then it also depends on if you did sized or O/S. I have some that are sized so once he outgrows those I will have to get a couple more bigger ones.

Edit* Reading comprehension fail on my part. I thought you meant quantity not type. Its all about preference. I have seen some people who are very confident that they will only like 1 type of diaper and thats all they buy. I wanted to experiment so I made mine a little more diverse and bought a couple fitteds, prefolds, AIO, and pockets so I have a few in each category.

  • Yeah, I read that in the FAQ section ... I guess my question is: what type of NB diapers?  How do you know if you bought 24 of the correct NB diaper that will fit correctly?  Does that make sense?

It makes sense. I haven't done it yet, but from what I've seen its just trial and error. If you end up not liking the fit of a certain diaper on your baby, save it for your next one who may have a different body type or sell it and buy more of those that work best for your current baby.

if you're looking for a cost effective solution for the NB phase, you can't beat prefolds and covers!  and they're guaranteed to fit.  24 infant prefolds, at $1.50 each (GMD is a bit more expensive, but cottonbabies have worked just fine for us too - we have both), plus 4 thirsties duo size 1 covers (~$12 each, and they go on sale quarterly), and you'll be set until LO fits into OS dipes.  I spent about $70 on our NB stash.

that said, some people hate PF's, but I love ours!  we're just starting to move into pockets and AIOs, and I actually find them harder/more confusing to learn to use, hah, since I'm still figuring out how to prevent leaks at night!

  • I have spent a lot more than that! We started cloth around 6mos so in 3 mo. Ive spent a few hundred!  My stash is no where near finished.  I figure I can use them with our next and you can also sell them.  I was spending at least $10-12 a week on pampers so in the long run we will be saving..
