3rd Trimester

Pumping question

Knowing I might be able to get a great deal on the Medela Freestyle tomorrow (going to make a few phone calls to various Target stores), I was wondering if it is even a good idea to go ahead and spend the money. I guess what I'm worried about is, what if I take the time to do the dance (buy at one Target, return and re-buy at another Target) and spend the money, and then it turns out after LO is born that I don't have a good supply, or that for some reason I can't pump? Is that a silly question? I just don't want to waste my money if I won't be able to use it. Obviously I am a first-timer, so I might not know what I'm talking about.

Opinions? Advice?

TIA. :)

Re: Pumping question

  • You could always rent one until you find out you will continue bfing or pumping exclusivily before you buy one.

But if I do end up pumping/bfing and have to buy one later, I'll kick myself for paying what would probably be full price at that point. There's a battle going on in my mind right now! If it is selling for $94, and I have a coupon for $20 off a Medela pump, as well as a $25 Target gift card, we could potentially only pay $50 or $60 for it.

    I think too much. :(

  • If you can get one at that cost, then why not???

  • For that price, I would buy it. Leave it in the box until you know if breastfeeding is going to work out for you. If it doesn't, you have 90 days to return it or you can always sell it on craigslist.

There was a sticker on the Medela boxes I bought with replacement parts that because of the nature of the product, they were not returnable- at all.

Also, you realize you are going to be out the full price either way as Target will usually only refund store credit, right? You aren't going to spend less money. And why the hell would would buy it and return elsewhere- just buy it at the cheaper place to begin with. What you are describing sounds very shady.

I agree that it sounds like the OP is planning something shady.  Why would she have to buy it, return it and rebuy it or whatever she said?  Just buy the pump or don't buy it.

  • It's the whole sale thing going on.  She's not trying to be shady... she's trying to save $200!!!  Anyway, I'd buy the pump and try it out.  They sell on Craigslist in my area, USED, for $50 to $100, and for even more on ebay.  If you can try another pump at the hospital, do that.  If pumping doesn't work for you, resell the pump and you might even get more for it than you spent in the first place!

  • Get it, don't open it, and keep the receipt.  If you don't use it, return it when LO is born.

  • What I want to know is how you're getting it so cheap @ Target....

Some targets are getting rid of the Freestyle from their inventory and have placed a $379 pump on clearance for $94.  Most of the stores that are doing this have sold out.  SO...If you buy it at another target for full price and then return it at a target where they would have sold it for $94, then you can repurchase it for that price.  It is an amazing deal!  I did this yesterday and was completely honest with the people at target.  They totally understood why I would want to pay almost $300 less!

Actually, like many people on The Bump, I called the Target store and told them exactly what I was planning on doing. They were completely fine with it. It's not shady at all. I also won't get back store credit. I asked the manager and he said if I have a receipt (which I will, of course), I would get my money back. I think it's smart shopping when you do something that is legal and that the store knows about and is ok with, and you save over $200 in the process! :)

ETA: Btw, I won't use it until I know I can. If for some reason I can't pump after LO is here, I'll just sell it new in box.

  • If you are determined to BF and pump you should get it!  Your supply will only get better if you bf and pump... I'm not saying it is easy for everyone.. especially working mothers .. but it is so worth it!  Go for it!
  • ESPECIALLY at that price!  Like others said you could always sell it on craigslist or something if it didn't work out for you..
  • I bought a Medela after seeing a really good sale with BRU and after finding out the cost of renting it from the hospital was almost the same price as buying my own.  I'm keeping it unopened/in the box until I'm sure my supply comes in and everything is fine.  I'll also be taking advantage of the lactation counselors at the hospital.

I believe the term you are looking for is "price adjustment" learn it and love it.It will be your best friend at Babies R Us, or at least it was for me. Its not really returning it and rebuying it, they are just giving you the difference in what you paid back but they have to scan it in and out of their system to have a paper document to justify the money they are giving out.
