Anyone use a neti pot while pregnant?

I have a friend who is pregnant and due in a few weeks and she put up on FB that she had a cold and hopes it clears up before her DD arrives. Well I suggested the neti pot if she is congested and she asked what it was and I told her and said it is safe while pregnant. ( my doc said it was fine to use) Another friend of hers posted after me "I looked that up and that does NOT look safe. I wouldn't do it sorry Ana"

Isn't it just a saline solution passing through your nostrils? I mean what is un safe about it? Honestly am I wrong?

  • There's nothing unsafe about it.  Unless she tries to snort it I guess.  Maybe she's just looking for sympathy, or is an nervous Nellie.

Oh it wasn't the pregnant girl that said that just a friend of her's that I don't know.

  • "many people use goldenseal in it, which is a herb not safe during pregnancy" but regular saline is fine.
  • Yep...it helped SO much. I've used it during this pregnancy, too.
  • I did. No idea why it wouldn't be safe....
  • Ok yeah I didn't think it was anything bad so that lady must just be a nervous nellie!

  • I would have been miserable without my neti pot. As long as she uses it the way it comes there is nothing unsafe about it. My Dr. is the one who told me about it.

  • Thanks ladies! I read it on kellymom that it was safe while bf and I remember plenty of people mentioning it on here during tri days.

  • What?  Not safe??  Because taking a pill would be safer?

    People are crazy.  And stupid.

I think a neti pot is the SAFEST thing you can do for congestion during pregnancy!

  • I would not have survived pregnancy without it!  It's probably safer than eating a banana...seriously.

  • Whoever wrote that has no idea what a neti pot is. I have used one nearly every day for 4 years since I first heard about them. I even used it while pregnant. With the exception of his third arm, DS came out fine.
  • I sure did... and I have no idea how someone could think it was unsafe.

Hahaha! Yeah my doctor had me take Mucinex without the D. I'm betting the neti pot is way safer than that!

  • Don't you get so irritated when someone posts something and you know they are so wrong and ridiculous? I have a pregnant friend who can't sleep I suggested Tylenol PM and her one friend came in saying it's a class B drug which means it isn't safe. Uh hello Tums is a class B drug!

Lol yes! I wanted to take Tylenol PM at the end because I had insomnia and we asked the pharmacist he told me it was NOT safe and blah blah. Uh we looked at the ingredients which was Tylenol and the stuff benadryl. BOTH were cleared by my doc...

I think you should reply with this.  It lets everyone save face

  • I used it while I was pregnant and while I breastfed and after. It doesn't enter your system, it goes from one nostril to the other. It's totally safe. My midwife suggested it.
