Need house cleaning motivation/schedule help!

Hello! I need some help with cleaning motivation/schedule! Does anyone have any blogs or tips that motivates them?

DS is really clingy when we are at home, I literally cannot do anything without him right on top of me, or wanting to be held. He will now play by himself for a few minutes, but I need some desperate advice on how to get the house clean/keep it clean.

When he finally goes down for a nap, I'm so beat I just want to sit there, and the way our house is set up, he hears any noises that are made :( The laundry room is outside of his bedroom, and he won't sleep if it is running, and all noise travels right up to his room...so nap time isn't a real option to get much cleaning done.

Any ideas? Thoughts? Helpful tips? Also, cleaning schedules that work for you? TIA :)

  • A lot of the women here like flylady.net, but I don't care for that site.

I kind of do my own thing, but have gotten a lot of motivation from these sites.

I have a weekly chore chart posted on the fridge & reference it often.

Also, I'd get your son a nice little white noise machine.

  • Check out flylady.com. She has you do a little each day.

Have you tried wearing your DS while you clean? The Ergo can hold a toddler and is pretty comfy on your back. I often have a baby on my back when I'm trying to get stuff down around the house and they love it. I have the same problem with the laundry room near the nursery. I do one load of laundry a day so I don't fall behind. I load the washing machine at night before I go to bed and turn it on in the morning when my LOs wake up. I throw the clothes in the dryer before their morning nap and fold and put away during the afternoon nap or at night. I try to do some cleaning while LOs eat snack. We have an open floor plan, so I can see them from LR, DR and kitchen. I sing songs and talk to them while I clean.

  • Ohh yess!! Totally ditto the baby wearing. I wear my DD on my back when I'm vacuuming/ mopping/ running laundry up & down the stairs... anything where I need her to stay safe and out of the way. The Ergo is awesome. Even at this stage in my pregnancy, I'm still able to comfortably wear my 30+lb toddler on my back.
  • Thank you! I'm going to have to look into an Ergo! We always run a fan on the highest setting, as well as a (gasp) humidifier, and sometimes the dryer (he will sleep through that, but not the washer) and he can still hear things! He must have super-sonic hearing ;) Our house is hard to explain, but like pp said, it is really, really open. Gonna go check out some Ergos :) thanks again!

Have you considered a baby carrier?

I'd be lost without my ergo.

  • This is how I organize my weekly cleaning duties, I sat down and made a list of everything that I needed to clean. Then I split it up over the days of the week.

Monday - Dust, furniture polish, vac all floors, swiffer wood and tile floors.

Tuesday - Clean guest bath (the girls bathroom)

Wednesday - Clean master bath, change master bed sheets (if I don't make it a weekly chore, I forget)

Thursday - Vac and swiffer tile and wood floors, then mop tile floors (I only mop wood 1 x every 3 months, I spot clean any messes - mopping wood too often is not good for the finish/sheen)

Friday - Clean kitchen (I do dishes everyday and wipe down counters everyday), wipe down all appliances, cabinets and deep clean the sink.

Saturday - clean playroom, pick out toys that are not being used and move them into the closet to be sold or donated. Wipe down all surfaces, tables with toys on them.

Sunday - Do girls laundry, change sheets on girls beds (again I forget if I don't make it a weekly chore), Clean pool and pool filter (only have to do this once every 3 weeks right now since we are on winter maintenance, come April, this will be a weekly chore again).

I wash sippy cups and wipe down counters everyday. I load the dishwasher throughout the day, so there are not dirty dishes in my sink. I have a wash tub that I have on the counter next to the sink that I put the girls dirty sippy cups and dishes in throughout the day and wash them 2x a day. Since I am home with twins all day and only use my dishwasher every 3 days, I cannot afford to buy enough sippys and dishes for both of them to use all day for 3 days, I also don't have the cabinet space to house all those cups and dishes, so they get washed by hand daily.

  • LOVE flylady!! She has saved me!  I have  VERY fussy LO!  She breaks everything up into small steps (15 minutes, or even 7  minutes).  That's a great amount of time to put down a baby, run around for 15 minutes, and then pick up the baby again.

  • Ah, all good tips!  And will be checking out the listed blogs.  This blog motivates me to organize EVERYTHING!:  https://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2010/03/you-asked-squeeky-clean.html

One more tip that I haven't seen on here is to have LO help you.  It definitely takes longer (but what doesn't these days), but you're spending time with them, getting things done, and, as a bonus, teaching them to help out around the house!  My 2 year old can help me carry clothes to the washing machine (granted its 2 articles of clothing at time), can help me put folded clothes away (especially socks), spot clean the floor with a damp paper towel, unload the non-breakable items in the dishwasher (and hand them to me), dust low parts of furniture, and he loves to "sweep" with the broom while I vacuum.  Toddlers are such copycats, they love to do anything that you're doing, so take advantage!
