XP: Excessive Amniotic Fluid

Does anyone else have/had this complication? Has your doctor said anything about having to have a csection?

Re: XP: Excessive Amniotic Fluid

  • I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios. No C-section and no inductions for me. However, I do go for 2 NST's a week and have a weekly ultrasound.

  • My MW thinks it's wonderful how plentiful mine is, although I beg to differ sometimes Wink  Are you sure it's a complication?  I've been given the impression it just happens to some of us and there's nothing to worry about.

My MW knows I'm going for a natural birth, and has never brought up the issue of a possible c-section because of it.  GL!

  • Yup, it's a complication. Maybe you don't have enough 'excess' for it to be a concern. When your water breaks there is the possibility of:

    1. Umbilical cord prolapse
    2. Baby flipping
    3. Placenta abruption (placenta detaches from the uterus before baby is born)

  • Also, and don't quote me on this, but can't it mean the baby isn't swallowing/digesting properly? I read that on the Bump at some point, so it could be completely wrong.

  • My sister has delivered 4 with excessive AF each time.  The last 3 were inductions at 39 weeks.  The doctors just kept an extra close watch on her and the fluid.  There are complications that could arise, but she never had to have a c-section.

  • I have this, and am having a c/s, but for different reasons. I have to have weekly NSTs until I deliver.

  • I had a ton according to the nurses (OB broke my water at the hospital). It just kept on coming. No c-section needed, not sure why a c-sec would be related unless there are other issues.
  • I just found out at 37 weeks that I have excess amniotic fluid.  I am now 38w4d and I have weekly NST and sono to monitor the fluid level.  She said my level was 26-27cm which is just above normal.  Never mentioned need for a c-section but she did take me out of work and said they would not let me go much past my due date (2/1/11) in which case I would be induced.  She said there are different reasons for this happening... a virus, late development of gestational diabetes, or idiopathic (unknown cause) - my bloodwork came back ok - no virus or diabetes.  I have also done some research and did find that it could be a problem with the baby's digestion ie: pyloric stenosis so I will ask my OB about that this week... I am just so uncomofortable and ready for him to come out!!

  • I had it with second child. I was trying for a VBAC. We ultimately chose a C/S b/c I was failure to progress and no signs of imminent labor.

The biggest fear is water breaking at home and cord prolapse. This means cord comes out before baby and baby suffocates. I was also told it could be a sign of digestive issues with baby. No issues with my son.
