GD - cheesecake ?

So I am craving cheesecake ... I blame one of the ladies here lol... But if I where to make a small cheesecake with splenda instead of real sugar, since light cream cheese has no carbs, it wouldn't be too bad, right? As long as I stick to one piece? .

Re: GD - cheesecake ?

  • Eh... I have the real stuff.  Just make sure the serving size sticks to my carb rules for my snack.

  • Don't forget to take the crust into consideration.

I know how you feel though.  All I've wanted to eat since I got my diagnosis is mint chocolate chip ice cream.  I did find some sugar free grasshopper cookies at the grocery store that have kind of helped with that, but I told DH I want the real deal as my first meal after popping this kid out.

Lol... dh teases me that our first stop after this baby is born is either Baskin Robins or Marble Slab. MMMMMMMM I want ice cream. The Skinny cow mini fudge bars are the only thing that are keeping me going.

  • I haven't even tried to squeeze anything like a skinny cow in.  I'm afraid if I find too many ways around the rules I'll start breaking them.  But once I slip up it's hard for me to gain traction again.  I totally admire the ladies who can still have treats in moderation.  For now, I stick to my sugar free cookies and sugar free crystal light juice pops.

  • We aren't supposed to have Splenda or any kind of artificial sugars at all during pregnancy. Be careful too for artificial sugars because they contain aspertene which kills brain cells and our little babies are trying to grow them.

*snort* Seriously? Well regardless of where you got your medical degree from (insert sarcasm here), I'll follow the advice of my OB, Perinatologist & Diabetes Educator all of whom said Splenda and Equal are fine to use, especially for those of us with GD.

To the OP, I'd personally opt for just a few bites of real cheesecake, because I rarely find a full serving of sugar-free substitutes as satisfying as the original when it comes to baked goods.

  • For Thanksgiving (before I was diagnosed with GD) I made a pumpkin cheesecake with Splenda because my DH's grandma is a type 2 diabetic (I found it on a diabetic recipe website). It turned out great--tasted like any other pumpkin cheesecake I'd had before. So, if you have a good recipe I'd go for it.

That being said, a friend (not thinking about the GD) sent my husband and I a cheesecake for Christmas. I had a very small slice as desert on Christmas. When I tested my sugar an hour and two hours later (wanted to see what effect it had on it) it had actually gone down each time. Just like everything else, different things affect people differently and the only way to know on any of it is to try and test (as my diabetic educator and doctor said).

I've found that a lot of the sugar free items have more carbs than regular versions--the diabetic educator told me that is often the case and to avoid those products. She (and my doctor) said that artificial sweeteners are perfectly fine during pregnancy.

  • I went out to dinner with a friend not too long ago and I knew I was going to want dessert. So I had salmon and broccoli (barely any carbs) and then I ate almost a whole piece of cheesecake. I avoided the crust and my sugar was just fine when I tested it later.

I say go ahead and have a slice!

  • There are some cheesecake recipes online, I don't even use full fat cream cheese and it comes out pretty good.

  • I had GD a few years ago, but I remember the dietician saying the articial sugars are ok but what you want to avoid are sugar alcohols.

If you think that any artificial sweetner is ok to put in your body go for it.  I however know how long it took for the FDA to approve that crap, and that the rejected it the first 8 times (starting in 1973.)  Meanwhile almost every congressional lawyer that worked for on the case against G.D Searle (the founder of Aspartame) dropped their case against his company and later started working for his company.  And the FDA has a list of over 90 side effects of Aspartame that you can find on their own website. While I don't have a medical degree I do have a brain and 2 BA's one in gov't.  If you would like me to site my resources for you I will be happy to list them for you.

Oh and MY OB told me to avoid artificial sweetners whenever possible. And I have GD also.

  • Splenda does not contain aspartame. It's sucralose. Since you don't use artificial sweeteners, what killed your brain cells? Yay for you on your two BAs including the one in government. I have a BS, a JD & I work for the government.

I never said Splenda was aspartame.  But since you know so much you should also know that Splenda is essentially sugar that has been bleached.

I'm obviously the one who uses my brain and doesn't just trust everything the gov't says to be safe is.  As it has been proven time and time again that it's not always the case.Everyone knows $$$  is way more important than our health to the Gov't.

There is no reason for you to be nasty to someone who thinks for themselves, especially when you don't know what your talking about.

    Go drink some more Kool-Aid.
