Does anyone dye their hair at home?

If so, what brand of box dye do you like? I know it's terrible for your hair and I usually get mine done at a salon, but cash is really tight right now and i'm desperate to cover the 2 inches of gray hair I have growing out.

  • Go to Sally's Beauty Supply.  They carry the same dyes that are used in salons.  You will need a color (creme or liquid depending on how you would like the consistency to be), level 20 hair developer, a packet of conditioner, gloves, and a bottle to mix the color and developer in.  Works much better than box dyes with a wider variety of color options.  I personally use Ion Color Brilliance and Ion Sensitive Scalp level 20 developer and love it.  You can get any kind of color though.

How much is all of that? I got my hair done at a salon but I'd like a cheaper option.

Really does not cost more than a box dye.  I'm just pulling from memory because I haven't bought the stuff in a month but I think its like $2 for developer, $2 for conditioner, $4 for color, and a pack of gloves and a bottle are like $1  or $2.  It ends up costing approximately the same as box but is SO much better for your hair and like the PP said your stylist will be relieved you didn't go for a box dye.

Omg that's awesome! All of that sounded like it'd be much more. Thank you!

  • I don't anymore but I did for years up until about 2 years ago. I loved Garnier Nutrisse. It has built-in highlights of color, so it looks more natural. If you have long or thick hair, be sure to use more than one box. It always took at least 2 boxes to cover my hair, even when it was short, because my hair is so thick.

ETA: I was a model for a hair trade show back when I still used Garnier Nutrisse. I was assigned to some fancy schmancy hair dye/product company from Europe and they were in disbelief that my awesome hair color came from a box. The hair color I came with got more talk and questions from the trade show attendees than the dye job they did on the other models.

Why are the box dyes worse? Just curious. They seem so much easier.

I'm wondering the same thing! I prefer to go get my hair highlighted, but will buy the box dye every now and then & go darker when I'm lazy and/or don't feel like spending the money.

  • I'm sure the hairstylists can give you a more technical reason why they're worse. I just know that if I use box dye more than once my hair gets really dry and unmanageable. So I only use it in emergency situations.

I *think* it has more metallics or something in it.  Plus, it makes it harder to fix or update when you do go back to a salon.

with that being said, when I colored my hair, I used Fieria (which is actually supposed to be the worst) Starry Night.  It was a beautiful blue/black.  *sigh* to be young and goth, lol

Box dyes are not really easier than just buying the stuff separately at Sally's.  It takes the exact same amount of steps to mix and apply.  Box dyes have lower levels of color and higher levels of chemicals which can cause damage and dry out your hair.   https://www.salonmemo.com/blog/tag/salon-color-vs-box-dye/

For more color and less chemicals go to Sally's!  I used to use box dyes all the time and was killing my hair.  Now I go to Sally's and get longer lasting color and my hair is much healthier.Wink
