Cloth Diapering

What is your routine like?

Do you have a certain time of day for washing dipes?  I was thinking first thing in the morning is ideal but it's already hectic in my house trying to get 2 out the door by 8:30 and add to that a newborn very soon...maybe late evening is better?  Also, for overnight changing did/do you have another changing station in the bedroom and what did it consist of?  Sorry if these questions are ridiculous but I'm just trying to make the transition as smooth as possible during the NB phase and it feels like if I go in with a plan I can handle the change better.

  • I actually wash after she goes to sleep, because the energy charge is cheaper during "off" hours. I try to avoid peak hours. Check your energy company's website for the peak/off hours. Also, I can hang dry the outers overnight and they're dry by morning. I put them near a heating vent (not directly over it) so they can get dry in the colder months. I do diapers every other day, typically, unless we have a huge huge messy poop, I just wash it that same day.

We share a bedroom for the time being, so her changing station is in the same room as us and her...I change her 1x in the middle of the night when she wakes up to nurse. If she STTN I don't worry about it. She usually sleeps in a fitted, stuffed with a few inserts or fleece, and then wool bottoms, so she rarely leaks.

I would say don't try too hard to have a plan...just do your laundry when you have a few free moments! Don't stress about it- that will make it hard to stick to. Good luck!!!

  • I wash every 3 days and usually in the late afternoons/evenings.  That way everything is dry by morning.  If I need to do a soak (which i do like once every week or 2) I start them earlier in the day.  I didn't CD during the NB phase so I can't help with the overnight changes.

  • We wash at night after her last diaper change. But the diapers typically don't get folded until the next day (or two!). For this baby, we plan to have most of her diapers at the changing table and we'll have a few in our room for overnight changes. I have a wet bag that fits into a small garbage can that we'll use in our bedroom and I'll throw them in with the other dipes in the morning.

  • Great thanks for all the feedback.  Maybe I'm overthinking this and it's not as hard as I'm anticipating.  I think I'll start washing after kids are in bed and hang dry overnight-- that sounds the most doable.

  • I start the wash in the morning, usually before she gets up or maybe while she's having breakfast. DD "helps" me do laundry by hanging out in the laundry room while I transfer stuff to the dryer and get the diapers ready to go on the drying line. Then she hangs out in the room where I hang the diapers, happily chewing on a clothespin.

All of her diaper changes are in her bedroom.

  • I start the first rinse as soon as DS2 is out of the bath and we're on our way up for bed.  Everything is usually in the dryer by the time I go to bed and in the morning I can take it out and fold.

  • I usually start diaper laundry around dinner time on the 3rd day.  That way, by the time DS is in bed the diapers are done and I can stuff the pockets while watching TV with DH.  I usually dry all my inserts and let the covers air dry- the last 10 minutes of the drying cycle I toss the covers in.

Our "diaper station" is in his bedroom.

  • Our laundry is on the third floor of our townhouse, which is the same floor as the bedrooms.  I begin the wash right before putting the kids in the bath, and the diapers are ready for the dryer as we finish putting them to bed.  About 2 hours later when I go to bed, I pull them out of the dryer and put them on the drying rack to finish drying (we have mainly AIOs which take longer to dry).
