If DS doesn't have any poopy diapers, do I still need to do an initial cold rinse? He sometimes goes 3-4 days between poops, so if I could save 3-4 loads of water, that would be great!
My DD poops multiple times a day so I always do the initial cold rinse, but my thought was that it was to avoid poo stains...right? So you could go without.
Hopefully someone with a less voracious pooper can help

You can try. If they smell clean after just the wash, then you're good to go. With our machine the rinse is totally necessary, even with just pee diapers.
Try it? You'll know pretty quickly if it doesn't work!
FWIW, sometimes after my rinse cycle, I'll throw her most recent diaper in for the regular cycle without pre rinsing and it hasn't been a problem -- but it's only one, so...
Thanks ladies - I tried it last night and didn't notice any smell when I hung them to dry. I think it'll probably work okay - DS's pee really doesn't smell yet. It might be an issue once we start solids though; I guess we'll see!
We often skip the pre-rinse even with poopy diapers. I just go straight to the hot wash. Diapers smell clean and I don't notice a difference in staining. If the diapers sit longer than usual, then I do a pre-rinse (often a warm pre-rinse). Abbyslane owner often recommends this.
