Moms of 6-7monthers...

Im posting here and on 6-9, but I figured the majority of you ladies aren't first-timers and can help me out. Ds3 is almost 7 mos., and completely refuses solids. I have tried since 5mos. to introduce cereal (rice, oatmeal), fruits, veggies, mesh teether. All with no success. He wont take more than 2 spoonfuls, which most is spit out. He gags and screams, turns his head, flips out. Its not pretty. I have tried to persevere and try a little bit each day--nothing. He just gags and ends up in a huge crying jag. I asked the pedi., and she said to keep trying to get his tongue and swallow developed. Clearly, its not working. It almost seems like he hates the texture. He wants to eat, bc he tries to take food out of your hand, and watches us eat like a hawk, reaching for the food. If I try to give him any--the gagging starts. He drinks 7oz bottles of nutramigen, and is gaining wt. (in 10%--not a heavyweight). I know that some babies are ebf for a yr., so maybe I'm worrying about nothing. Its just I never had this with the other 2 kids. Any suggestions?

  • I would keep trying, maybe not every day, but intermittently. I wouldn't turn it into a knock-down drag out battle.

I think it was Cleo's DD who basically refused solids until she was almost a year, and then just picked up and took off with them as if she'd been eating them all along.

  • DD#2 refused to eat baby food. It was a battle.  She wouldn't eat more than 2 bites of it.  I finally gave up and started on more solid foods (table foods) and that worked better.  Meals times were awful  both of us would cry.

  • I would stop for a while and try again in a few weeks. I tried to start my youngest DS on solids at 7m and he wanted nothing to do with it. I kept trying every few weeks and finally at 10mths he started eating solids.  He has always 8een on the small side, 8ut was still gaining so the pedi was never worried. Some kids just don't take to solids at a young age.

  • I would look into doing baby led weaning instead of purees.
