Trouble TTC

IVF consult

DH and I had our IVF consult today.  Thanks to everyone yesterday with helping get me ready with questions.  It was definitely a lot of information to take in.

Basically the RE'd put me on the antagonist protocol, probably starting me at 300units menopur and 300units gonal f or follistim a day.  He's hoping to have 3 eggs at retrieval...ideally he said 6 would be a great number for me.  My body sucks.  Sad  All those meds and we're hoping for 3.

He said our chances of this working based on my diagnosis could be anywhere from 5-15%.  I think my jaw hit the floor when he said that.  We'd almost definitely be doing a 3dt because he doesn't even know that our embryos could make it to a 5dt.  However he recommended assisted hatching with the 3dt.

The nurses and doctor all commented on the fact that hopefully our meeting today was for nothing and the IUI's worked.  Seeing that this is our 6th round of IUI and he's giving us such a low chance of IVF even succeeding, I'm not thinking anything "positive" will come from this cycle.  I'm 30 years old and he told me when looking at success rates and stats online that I need to look at the 40-42 year old data b/c that's the age my body is acting.

I was hoping to leave the appt feeling optimistic about having to go through this.  I appreciate our doctor's honesty and I don't want anything sugar coated, but it's still hard to hear.

What an expensive crap-shoot IVF is. Indifferent

Re: IVF consult

  • I'm so sorry, hon.  It is better to not get things sugar coated, but all things DOR seem to be so hard.  I'm sorry that you didn't get better news.  I also can relate to IVF being an expensive crap-shoot.

That being said, you really don't know how well or poorly this will go until you've tried.  They could get your 3-6 eggs and discover that they are still great quality.  All you really need is one good egg!

My RE did say that DOR doesn't always mean poor equality, especially if you are younger.

Good luck!  And, if you ever need anyone to chat with, look me up!

ETA - I mentioned the egg quality part because that is the reason my RE (my original one and my new) haven't compared me to a 40 something year old.  It is also something that isn't known until after some are retrieved and observed.  You may make fewer eggs, but you may also be more likely to get a good egg from those few than someone older than you.

Thanks...and I know what you mean about the egg quality issue.  Hopefully once we do (if we do?) get my eggs out of me (that sounds so weird) they'll be able to see that they're good.  It's all so nervewracking!

  • (((hugs)))  I am sorry that the news was not as you'd hoped, but I agree with STL - you may get few eggs, but they may be great quality.  Try to stay positive.

  • (((hugs))) I am still very optimistic for you. I agree with what STL said on the egg quality issue - maybe based on your response during your IUI cycles, it IS likely you won't produce a huge number of eggs during an IVF cycle, but until they actually see exactly what kind of eggs you are producing, I think it's presumpative to assume they won't be good or even great ones. Thinking of you.
