I have a nice size bonus room over the garage. I was thinking about joining a gym but I went upstairs this morning and realized I have plenty of room to put some equipment upstairs. My question is: What exactly would I need to get a good mix of cardio and weights? At the gym, I usually do basic weight lifting and spin classes. I don't want a treadmill because I seriously have never been able to walk or run on a treadmill without tripping. I suppose I could get a rack with different size dumbbells but do you think I need something to do chest presses or lat pull downs? If so, what?
Also, we have a spare tv we could put up there. I was thinking about getting a Wii. I love spin classes but it is hard for me to get to them because of my work schedule. So what would you think about getting a Spin bike and maybe some spin workouts through the Wii? My bro is a spin instructor and could get me a discounted spin bike.
TIA.
Re: Home Gym Setup
My home gym is in my basement, and for the longest time it consisted only of free weights, resistance bands, a swiss ball, bosu, wooden balance board and aerobic step. I the last year, we have added 2 pull up bars, a chest press station, a TRX, kettlebells and a rowing machine.
I think if you just went with what I had initially, that would be more than adequate to start with. I love my rowing machine, and I am buying a treadmill at the end of the month. If you can get a discounted spin bike, I say go for it! Also, I highly recommend the TRX and kettlebells. You can get great DVDs that are specific to all of this equipment,
I don't think you need anything as far as a lat and chest station or anything like that. You can get the same back workout from suspending some bands from the ceiling. If you have the money though, and you know you will use it, then go for it as well.
Hope that helps!
